How to create a mummy costume with your own hands?

A mummy costume is a simple outfit that even a child can make. To recreate the image of an embalmed body from an Egyptian tomb, you do not need to be a professional make-up artist and spend large amounts on the purchase of a special outfit. It is enough to represent the image of the mummy. A suit from the simplest available tools can be made in less than half an hour!

The cheapest and one-time suit

Want to amuse your family, friends or guests? Use the cheapest toilet paper, the cost of which does not exceed 10 rubles per roll. Thanks to the gray color, you will create a unique mummy costume. The main thing here is not beauty, but shabby and terrifying appearance. After all, what mummies can be beautiful if they have lain in the tomb for thousands of years?

Attention! No need to tear toilet paper! Try to wrap the body so that it is like a single thread.

We recommend starting to create an image of a mummy with legs. Lock the toilet paper and wrap it around your limbs carefully so as not to tear it. Coat the left leg, then go to the right, and then proceed to the design of the torso. Leave your hands and head in the end.

Do not forget what the mummy costume looks like. You can see the photo above: there should be small gaps on the body, as if bandages on a withered body practically do not hold. Leave only eyes, palms and feet in sight.

Feel free to the pharmacy!

Despite the fact that the costumes of the mummy look very similar to each other, they are radically different. It all depends on the materials, because if the toilet paper can tear or instantly deteriorate when in contact with moisture, the bandages will help recreate the real image of an embalmed body.

To create a great outfit, we will need the usual medical bandages, but it is best to use elastic ones. Get non-sterile bandages and not the best quality. So you can make the mummy costume more believable.

Before starting to create an image, it is recommended to paint white bandages in gray or brown. To do this, you can use ordinary tea leaves or dissolved watercolor in water.

Why is an elastic bandage better? Because it will fit to the body more tightly than regular gauze. However, it costs many times more expensive and is unlikely to be used for its intended purpose in the near future, and it is not a pity to throw out a cheap bandage after the holiday.

Work hard

To make a mummy costume with your own hands, you need to take a plain fabric. It is not necessary to purchase new textiles, but just use old unnecessary sheets or diapers. Even if you decide to buy a fabric, then ordinary coarse calico costs no more than 100 rubles per meter.

To make bandages, you need to prepare scissors, a pot of water, a stove and dye. We cut the fabric into flaps, the width of which is not more than 10 centimeters. We put the pan on the fire and bring to a boil.

Now we need to dye the fabric and give it the look of old, worn bandages. You can use bagged tea or coffee for this. Add a few tea bags to the pan until the water turns brown. Dip the white bandages in the water and cook for several minutes. Then remove the cloth and set to dry. Wrap the body with finished bandages and create an image of the mummy.

What fabric to choose?

If you still decide to purchase fabric in a textile store, then you will need a universal memo that allows you to choose the right material at an inexpensive price:

  • Linen. Perhaps the most successful material for creating a mummy costume. Firstly, in appearance, the fabric resembles the ancient bandages used to wrap an embalmed body. Secondly, natural linen has a grayish-brown color, which is why there is no need to dye the fabric for the suit;
  • Cotton. Thicker fabric than linen knit. Inexpensive, durable and durable. You can purchase any color, ideally stains.
  • Calico A distant relative of cotton. Represents a dense fabric at which weaves are clearly visible. Inexpensive coarse calico quickly loses its qualities, especially after repeated washing. But that’s exactly what we need, because the mummy’s costume should look as if the fabric is saturated with dust, human skin and embalming substances.

Useful Tips

If you do not want to wrap your body with numerous bandages, then you can create an imitation of a mummy. To do this, take a gray or white turtleneck and the same color tights. Cut small flaps of fabric, sew them evenly on your clothes to make it look like you are wrapped in a bandage.

Another useful tip: do not forget that the real mummy, risen from the tomb, looks in a special way. She has a withered body, bandages in parts weakened and hang randomly from her body, her skin is brown, and all limbs have literally become bare bones.

To create a believable costume, it is important to apply makeup on the skin. You can use the foundation, affecting all the light areas (hands, neck, face, feet), and the bandages should slide off the body, exposing the painted areas.
