The Patriot is a mid-size SUV that has been mass-produced at the UAZ plant since 2005. At that time, the model was quite crude, and therefore every year it was constantly updated. To date, there are many modifications of this SUV, including the Patriot (diesel, ZMZ-51432). What is noteworthy, the first diesels were delivered with Iveco. However, due to many technical flaws, they were discontinued. At the moment, the main diesel engine for the Patriot is precisely ZMZ-51432. It is worth noting that the predecessor of the famous “Patriot” is the UAZ “Simbir”, which had a number index of 3162. The machine was produced from 2000 to 2005. Interestingly, “Patriot” was the first UAZ car to be equipped with air conditioning, airbags, a multimedia system, ABS and other “benefits of civilization”. By the way, it was at Patriot that the system of a single fuel tank was used for the first time (there used to be two separate ones - not the most thoughtful design).
Design
The appearance of the Ulyanovsk SUV has a dynamic and aggressive silhouette. The machine is recognizable from afar by its characteristic chopped forms and crystal "big-eyed" optics.
Massive wheel arches add brutality to the SUV. No, this is not a crossover, but a real man’s, frame jeep with all-wheel drive and locks (and not electronic, like the “overseas” competitors). For 2017, the car looks very decent.
As for the overall dimensions, they practically do not differ from the predecessor "Simbir". So, the length of the UAZ ZMZ-51432 Patriot SUV is 4.78 meters, width - 1.9 meters excluding mirrors (with them - 21 cm more), height - 2 meters. The factory clearance of the Patriot is 21 cm. But this is far from the limit. Ready-made kits for suspension lifts are now on sale. So, 33-inch mud tires fit quietly into the arches . Let's look inside the Ulyanovsk "Patriot". Interior design deserves attention. Inside there is a modern panel, a center console and a multimedia steering wheel. This UAZ has not yet been used. As we noted earlier, the first diesel UAZ modifications were equipped with a IVECO F1A turbodiesel engine. He developed a power of 116 horsepower and gave 270 Nm of torque. What is noteworthy, the same engine was put on the small-capacity trucks Fiat Ducato. But at UAZ this engine did not take root - either from non-modern characteristics, or from poor-quality assembly. What now?
At the moment, the IVECO F1A engine is not installed on the UAZ Patriot. Instead, the Ulyanovsk plant arranged the supply of the 51432 ZMZ power unit. The engine with a cylinder volume of 2.3 liters develops a capacity of 114 horsepower. However, unlike the "Ivekovsky" one, a more modern injection system is used here. At 51432 ZMZ, the fuel supply “Common Rail” was implemented. This allowed to reduce fuel consumption and increase traction and operational characteristics.
The ZMZ-51432 diesel engine has an aluminum block and a head, and also has an overhead camshaft. The unit meets the Euro-4 emission standards. The engine uses a timing chain drive. There are hydraulic gap compensators on the valves. The pressure on the nozzles is simply colossal - 1,450 bar. Also, a turbine is used on the 51432 ZMZ engine, which allows to obtain significantly higher efficiency.
How economical?
All motorists know that a diesel engine, whatever it is, will be much more economical than a gasoline engine. The diesel engine ZMZ-51432 was no exception. Reviews say that in the city the fuel consumption is up to 12 liters (although according to passport data the car fits into the "top ten"). But still it is much less than that of gasoline. On the UMP motors, the Patriot was incredibly voracious. In the city he “ate” up to twenty liters of gasoline. As for the 51432 ZMZ unit, its minimum consumption in real conditions is 8.5 liters (80 km / h on the cruising route). Responses of owners say that if your priority is economy, you should definitely pay attention to the diesel modification of the Patriot.
How does it go?
Even before the diesel version entered the market, motorist reviews noted the poor performance of gasoline engines. And all, even a three-liter. The car was clearly not enough power, had to twist it to four to five thousand. How does a car with a ZMZ-51432 aggregate behave on the road? "Patriot" is characterized by more frisky dynamics of dispersal. Torque is available almost from the bottom, and at the top - the turbine picks up. The maximum torque is available in the range of two thousand revolutions. If you press the accelerator pedal at this moment, you can feel a sharp pickup. However, after 80 thrust disappears. The car accelerates very slowly in the range of 80-100. By the way, the maximum speed of the car is 135 kilometers per hour.

True, this is not at all comfortable for the Patriot speed. Firstly, the car is very difficult to gain. Secondly, hard plastic in the cabin makes itself felt. Plus, there is the characteristic roar of a diesel engine, which is difficult to remove even with several layers of noise insulation. Responses of owners say that the car is clearly not in sixth gear. At 90 kilometers per hour, the engine is already gaining 3 thousand revolutions (and for a diesel engine this is a red line). By the way, the gearbox here is used from a gasoline engine (not the most technologically advanced solution). Therefore, it is possible that the UAZ will be further developed.
Off-road diesel
Perhaps this is its main advantage. Unlike gasoline engines, 51432 ZMZ performs better in the absence of roads. Where a large moment was required, let this unit pull it tight, but confidently pulled the car out of the trap. On gasoline engines often had to "play" the clutch, and traction disappeared very quickly. Off-road diesel is the right thing, owners say.
Design flaws of the Patriot
The negative aspects of the design of the "Patriot" drivers include the low location of the bridges.
And if on the 469th the problem was solved by installing military bridges, then such a scheme will not work here. Also on the “Patriot” there was a problem with the doors - the opening angle is too small. This problem, perhaps, has plagued UAZ since the Soviet era, when the same “goat” appeared.
