How is the power steering fluid replaced?

Unfortunately, many motorists do not pay due attention to the condition of the power steering fluid . However, it is important to regularly check its level and color. Power steering fluid replacement is necessary in the following situations:

  • If repair work has been carried out related to the replacement or installation of the steering gear.
  • If since the last replacement the car drove more than 20-25 thousand kilometers.
  • If the liquid becomes cloudy or changes color greatly.
  • If extraneous noise is heard when steering the steering wheel.

How does the power steering fluid change?

Power Steering Fluid Replacement
First of all, all the waste fluid for the hydraulic booster is drained.

For this purpose you will need:

1. Special capacity, as Power steering oil is not such a harmless substance. It is very important that the liquid does not get on the skin, clothing and body of the machine.

2. A hose with which used oil will be drained into a container.

Manipulation occurs when the ignition is turned on (so that the steering wheel is possible), after the engine cools down a little.

First you need to raise the tank and disconnect the return hose. In its place, connect the prepared hose and lower one end into a container. Next, you need to start the car and repeatedly turn the steering wheel in different directions (all the way) until the tank is empty. Now turn off the engine and fill in new oil.

Power steering fluid replacement: what needs to be considered?

Power Steering Fluid
Use only products recommended by the manufacturers. Do not believe the claims of sellers that there are universal fluids that are suitable for any car. On the label of each product there is information about tolerances. If you do not see recommendations for using specific oils in your car, refuse to purchase.

When the oil has completely merged, flush the tank and, if necessary, clean the entire system. Then - add new oil.

Also note that one hundred percent replacement of the power steering fluid is not possible. Anyway, a little old oil remains in the system. Therefore, it is desirable to use the same tool. If you do not know which fluid is filled in the hydraulic booster, flush the tank and the system using special tools.

If the power steering fluid periodically "leaves"

Power steering fluid
If the power steering oil level periodically decreases, check the integrity of the tank. If it has damage or cracks, it is better to replace it. If the power steering fluid "leaves" relatively slowly, do not rush to sound the alarm and think that the rail is flowing or the stuffing box has been knocked out. Some hoses may have worn out over time. First, try using a sealant-conditioner. It can be used both as an independent oil for power steering, and as an additive. This tool allows you to eliminate small leaks, reduces friction between parts and allows you to extend the life of the hydraulic booster system. Of course, all these effects are possible only with strict observance of the instructions for use and all the recommendations of the car manufacturer.

Remember that a lack of power steering fluid can cause serious damage. Make a diagnosis.

Power steering fluid replacement can be done either manually or using special equipment. You can try to carry out this manipulation yourself, but it is better to contact a car service. You will not pay so much for such work and you can be sure of a good result.
