The straight-through muffler is a pipe inserted into a larger diameter cylinder. There are holes in the pipe along its entire length, and the inner edge is plugged. The space between the walls is filled with a special fiber. It may vary depending on what kind of sound is required. Usually, this fiber “cuts” high frequencies, leaving only a solid and deep bass.
Now about the passage of air. It enters the outer cylinder from the intake pipe, since the inner part is sealed, and then, passing through the filter, it enters the holes in the inner pipe, and then into the atmosphere.
The VAZ muffler, even once-through, does not have high performance, since the engines do not have large volumes and can not create a lot of pressure in the exhaust system. Their main malfunction, like all cars, is burnout.
