The miracle of the icon of the Holy Savior
At the beginning of the seventeenth century, on this site was a small wooden church, consecrated in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. After the Pugachev riot in 1779, the Spassky Church was erected nearby. Ufa at that time was at the center of an amazing event captured by historians. Due to lack of funds, construction lasted a very long time. For more than two decades, the Spassky Church was erected. In 1829, only the chapel of St. Nicholas was consecrated. Description
According to the architect’s intention, the church was decided to erect “in the image” of the St. Petersburg Kazan Cathedral. In fact, only a few of the most general principles of composition were borrowed from the famous original. We are talking about the central domed church and two colonnades symmetrically extending from it, in terms of making together a quarter of a circle. Their ends, going out to the street, ended with two similar belfries.
In the first tier of one of them a chapel was built, in another there was a guardhouse. Specialists call the peculiarity of the temple building a disturbed orientation, traditional for Christian monasteries. In an effort to open the front space to the street, the builders were forced to turn the altar part to the north, and not to the east. The facade was decorated with a colonnade and two bell towers at the edges. The Spassky Temple (Ufa) was decorated only in 1892 with painting. The iconostasis were painted in Moscow.
In the Soviet years
After the revolution, the Spassky temple was badly damaged. It was completely destroyed both as an object for religious worship of people, and as an architectural structure.
