The famous athlete was born in the Ukrainian city of Lugansk in 1963, on December 4. Parents of Sergey Bubka were not related to sport by profession. His father, Nazar Vasilievich, worked in the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union (ensign), and the champion's mother, Valentina Mikhailovna, worked in the clinic. But his brother, Vasily, who is 3 years older than the record holder, also did pole vaulting and even finished second in the 1986 European Championships. The brother of Sergei Bubka did not intend to beat the record and in 1997 left professional sports.

The sons of an outstanding champion chose tennis. However, Vitaliy (senior) is no longer participating in competitions. The champion’s nephew, Alexander, also chose the path of his uncle and father - pole vaulting. Sergey’s wife, Liliya Fedorovna, also operates in the field of sports - she trains groups in the rhythmic gymnastics section.

The great champion came into sports at the age of 15. He was introduced to the jump by a friend who showed him how the pole vaults train. Probably, intuition prompted Sergei that this is exactly what he should give all his energy and time to. His coach was the talented athlete Petrov V.A., who correctly calculated the potential of the future champion.

The first record of Sergey Bubka was taken at the 5.7 m bar in 1983 in the capital of Finland. It is noteworthy that this was the first ever track and field championship. From that moment, Sergey Bubka plannedly made a number of record jumps over several years (through 1997 inclusive) and won the title of six-time world champion in pole vaulting.

In addition to sports titles, he was awarded the title "Hero of Ukraine", and also became an honorary citizen of Lugansk and Donetsk Sergey Bubka. So, in 2008, the Laureus Academy of World Sports awarded Sergey Nazarovich the prize and the title of best athlete on the globe among men. The champion also received the Prince of Asturias award in Spain in 1991 and other awards from Belarus, Slovakia, Italy and other countries.

Sergey Bubka's world record (35 jumps) was entered (as the most numerous) in the Guinness book. During the lifetime of the athlete, a monument was erected in Donetsk (1999). Now the talented record holder leads a successful business, he runs a bakery, a stationery manufacturing company, a number of shops and gas stations, and he also has a stake in one of the largest financial organizations in Ukraine.
