Today, some citizens are beginning to engage in agriculture, in particular cattle breeding. And then they have to deal with hitherto unfamiliar things.
Many only for the first time learn that cattle are neutered. And some even stop their tails. Naturally, the newly-made farmers do not have any idea what the name of an idle goat or a castrated ram is called. Also, not everyone knows why such operations are necessary.
What is the name of castrated ram?
From somewhere it happened that the word "dude" has something to do with a pet. In fact, this is not so at all. And in all dictionaries, a castrated ram is called a wall or wall. Sometimes added to this series is the name “boulder”.
Although sometimes a castrated ram is called “hollowed” or “laid out”, which is also correct. This is the name of a male who has lost the ability to cover females due to surgery or other veterinary actions. Depriving an animal of this natural ability is called "castration" or "freezing." Sometimes the people in this case use the expression “lay out a ram”.
Why do we need castration of males?
On the one hand, it may seem to an uninitiated person that this procedure is harmful, from which there is no benefit to the herder. Well, in fact, do rams need to be neutered if the farmer's main goal is to constantly increase the herd population?
The answer will be in the affirmative - it is necessary! And the reasons explaining why the rams are castrated are as follows:
- The meat of unclaimed males (bulls, boars, goats, rams and other animals) acquires a specific aftertaste after they enter the time of maturity.
- Castrated ram is gaining mass faster, better accumulating fat. And for its fattening requires less strong feed, which, in turn, is much cheaper.
- Owing to the hollowing, animals lose interest in fights among themselves, become calmer, not aggressive towards humans.
- The owner may not bother with providing males with separate premises and pastures from males: unwanted fertilization now does not threaten lambs.
Why do sheep farmers sometimes resist covering females?
Often, different animals are kept in the same household. The sheep farmer, for example, purchased individuals of more advanced breeds. But he still had young from the past factory. Mixing different breeds of animals is not only pointless, but also harmful.
Some females, being early ripe, are ready to cover at a fairly young age. But fertilization ahead of time will undermine the animal’s health, its offspring may be weak and non-viable.
There is also the danger of covering the sheep with a weak ram. This can also lead to the birth of low-quality offspring.
To prevent this from happening, the farmer is forced to keep males and females separately. And he also has to allocate pastures for grazing in different places. And this requires the attraction of an additional labor unit, financial investments. Therefore, the easiest way out will be castration of outbred or simply extra sheep. After all, for the normal functioning of the herd for 15 sheep, one full-fledged adult sheep is quite enough.
What is castration?
Synonyms of this word are called, as already mentioned above, peeling, laying out, and hollowing. The medical name for this procedure is filament.
What is the process itself? The purpose of man is to cause male infertility artificially. There are several ways to achieve this.
Bloodless methods for emasculating rams
There are two of them today. The first is made using a special device called burizzo. It is used both for stopping tails and for castration.
With the help of burrizo squeeze the skin and flesh along with the testicles. Thanks to this action, they become bleeding and drying out. It can be considered positive that it avoids infection of open wounds, infection with tetanus of the animal. Of the negative, sufficient painfulness of the procedure and its duration are recognized.
Rubber rings also belong to the bloodless method. This procedure can take a duration of 10 to 20 days.
Sheep breeders sometimes use rubber rings for shortened castration, when only the skin of the scrotum is pulled together without trapping the testicles. This process is less painful. But the desired result is achieved, since the testicles raised up cannot participate in the fertilization of the females.
Laying males using a scalpel
Very often, veterinarians act the old fashioned way - they perform an operation on a ram, which has reached six months, only by treating the skin before it is cut with alcohol. Few people think about doing something to anesthetize the procedure.
Nevertheless, some people still believe that since animals are under the power of man, serve him, even as food, he simply must minimize their suffering. Therefore, shortened castration was invented not so long ago.
This procedure differs from the traditional method of operating in that during its execution only the scrotum is removed from the male. The ram’s testicles themselves remain intact, but are pushed up. Thanks to this, the male, although it produces testosterone, is not able to fertilize the sheep.
And, finally, everyone knows directly the castration, in which the scrotum is cut into a ram, the testicles are released and removed. As a result of the operation, an open wound is obtained, into which an infection from the outside with dust, dirt, flies and other insects can get.
A person who decides to engage in cattle breeding should know more about his business. And therefore it is so important to keep abreast of all the innovations that scientists and veterinarians offer sheep farmers.
