Stepanova-Skvortsova Hospital in St. Petersburg is one of the oldest psychiatric institutions in Russia. Built in the 19th century, the clinic never changed its purpose. And today the main building of the hospital is also a place of attraction for architecture lovers.
Tsesarevich initiative
Skvortsova-Stepanova Hospital was founded in 1870 on a personal initiative and at the expense of Emperor Alexander III. The project of the complex was created by the famous architect I.V. Shtrom. In summer, the first stone of the future clinic was laid, and in the autumn of the following, 1871, the consecration and opening of the House of Charity for the mentally ill, designed for 120-130 guests, took place. The chief physician of the clinic was appointed life doctor A.V. Timofeev.
Initially, the hospital was intended for patients from the nobility, spiritual and merchant classes. One year of treatment cost about 5 thousand rubles. Such contributions made it possible for the administration to purchase the best equipment and provide the “mournful soul” with excellent living conditions - steam heating, a home environment, and much more. By the end of the 19th century, the number of places in the clinic increased to 350, new rooms were added, but not wooden, but stone. Some patients were so guarded by their relatives that separate houses were built for them.
Development
In 1904, the hospital expanded. The architect G.I. Lyutsedarsky designed and built two buildings, one for officers, the second for maids of honor. Today they represent unique and well-preserved architectural monuments of northern Art Nouveau. No bars were installed on the windows in the hospital, but ship windows were used everywhere, which were highly resistant, and they did not collapse even from a bullet shot from a revolver.
In 1885, the hospital received a new complex of buildings, designed for 600 beds, where urban patients were admitted. He headed the department of V.F. Chizh, and the contents were released from the city treasury. All patients were ordinary citizens, so they did not have to rely on luxuries. In 1919, both institutions were combined into a single Udelninskaya Psychiatric Hospital, a little later called - the 3rd Psychiatric Hospital. In 1931, the clinic was named after I. I. Skvortsov-Stepanov.
Since the foundation of the institution, the church of St. Panteleimon the Healer was opened in it. In 1929, it ceased to exist - the temple was rebuilt for household needs. In 1937, medical and labor workshops and another building for patients were lined up on the territory. Replenishment of places for patients occurred in the late 60s - there were three new medical buildings with a total capacity of 240 beds. In the same period, 18 more branches were opened. Stepanova-Skvortsova Hospital could accept up to 1900 patients, but the real needs of the city were at the level of 3 thousand beds.
Description
With the advent of a new economic era in Russia, the Stepanova-Skvortsova hospital has not lost its relevance and, having managed to survive in the 90s, continues to be an advanced medical institution. Today, the psychiatric clinic is one of the largest specialized institutions in the country. By the mid-90s, the temple of Panteleimon the Healer, along with a belfry and a tent, was restored on the territory of the hospital. In 2007, a bust was established near the church to the founder of the clinic, Tsar Alexander III, lost during the Soviet period.

Positive reviews
GUZ GPB Skvortsova-Stepanova (hospital) received positive reviews from patients who were treated in different departments of the clinic. Visitors to the day hospital talk about attentive doctors and nurses, normal conditions in wards and common areas.
Patients agreed that highly specialized psychiatric institutions are necessary. A person with a nervous breakdown, depression receives full medical and professional help from a psychotherapist, overcomes his problems and can not only control his condition, but knows why it occurs and how to deal with it.
Patients with more severe forms of mental illness, destroying addictions in the form of alcoholism or drug addiction, as well as their relatives, also respond positively to the institution. Almost all patients considered that the Skvortsova-Stepanova hospital gave them the opportunity to return to normal life. The departments for these categories of patients are more strict in content, but in the end, the disease can be defeated and often forever. Of course, no one wants to be in a "mournful house", but living with a mental disorder is impossible.
Negative reviews
A lot about the hospital Stepanova-Skvortsova and negative reviews. Basically, patients treated in a hospital speak negatively about the clinic. The reviews say that an ambulance often sends people who do not need psychiatric care to the clinic. But at the same time, all those who are taken to the hospital on emergency, are held in closed wards for at least one month, even if the diagnosis is not confirmed. The clinic has strict discipline and no less rigorous treatment of patients. Many felt that the conditions of stay were bordered by prison conditions, right down to the punishment system.
In addition, former patients wrote that in some departments almost adequate people were placed in the same room as violent patients. Such neighborhoods have a negative effect on impressionable individuals, despite the fact that their condition is already unstable. There are many complaints about nursing staff. Accusations of violence, blackmail and evasion of their duties are brought. Some patients wrote that all occupational therapy consists of the work of a cleaning lady - a nurse can give out cigarettes or sweets for high-quality floor cleaning and house cleaning.
Some former patients believe that doctors specifically prescribe a large number of medications so that the departments are calm and do not have to communicate with patients more than once a day. There are many claims to nutrition - there are stories that it is simply not enough for all patients, and transmission from relatives often disappears. Complaints to the administration about the arbitrariness of the junior medical staff do not produce any results, as former patients report; on the contrary, they lead only to repressive measures against those who wrote them.
