Krasnoyarsk - the largest of the 9 existing regions of Russia. By the size of the territory, it is the second subject of the Federation, second only to the Republic of Sakha. By administrative and economic division, the region belongs to the Siberian Federal District and the East Siberian Economic Region. The capital of the region is, of course, the city of Krasnoyarsk.
Description of the region
The Krasnoyarsk Territory, whose area is 2,367 km, is 14th in the number of inhabitants among the regions of the country and has about 3 million people.
In the east, the region borders on the Irkutsk region and the Republic of Sakha (formerly Yakutia). The western borders pass through the Khanty-Mansiysk, Yamalo-Nenets districts, and Tomsk and Kemerovo regions; southern - Republics of Tuva and Khakassia. The northern borders of the region are washed by the cold waters of the Arctic Ocean.
The region was formed during the USSR in the territory that was previously occupied by the Yenisei province. The territory in Soviet times included 31 districts, the autonomous region of Khakassia, Evenki and Taimyr districts. In 1991, after the collapse of the USSR, the Khakass region became an autonomous subject of the Federation.
The modern administrative division of the region includes 44 districts and 17 urban districts, headed by the governor.
Geographical Information
The extreme regions of the Krasnoyarsk Territory run along the boundary lines of the demarcation of Eastern Siberia and extend almost 3,000 km from north to south. In the north, the Putorana plateau rises, and the southern border abuts against the Altai-Sayan mountain range. The highest point of the region is Mount Kamen, whose height is 1,701 m.
A large Yenisei River flows throughout the region. On the left side of the stream is the West Siberian Lowland, and on the right is the Central Siberian Plateau. The northern shores are washed by two seas: the Laptev and Kara. The Krasnodar Territory also includes islands that are located in the waters of the Arctic Ocean.
On the territory of the region is the geographical center of Russia near Lake Vivi. The extreme northern point of the Federation is also located in the region - this is Cape Chelyuskin.
Climate
The climate of the region is diverse. The Krasnoyarsk Territory, whose area covers the temperate, subarctic and arctic climatic zones, is divided into 5 regions. The most severe climate in the northern region. High frosty temperatures, cold windy winters, short summers. On the Taimyr Peninsula, there is almost always minus air temperature, even in summer it is often below zero. On islands located in the ocean, the frosty period lasts all year round, and the land is covered with snow.
In the central, western and eastern parts of the region there are short hot summers with a dry climate, long harsh winters. The southern ones differ from the rest in their warm climate and moderately cold winters.
Minerals
Russia, including the Krasnoyarsk Territory, is very rich in minerals. There are more than 1000 deposits in the described region. The largest mineral deposits are coal, peat, ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Also in the region, there are 300 deposits of truly expensive metals.
70% of all coal deposits in the country are in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The main state deposits for the extraction of platinum, gold, as well as diamonds are concentrated in the region.
Water resources
In addition to minerals, the center of the Krasnoyarsk Territory is rich in water resources. The high-water river of Russia, the Yenisei, together with its tributaries forms a single and natural transport system. There are more than 3,000 lakes.
Abundant and forest resources. The forest fund of the Krasnoyarsk Territory by region is the second largest in the territory.
In terms of economy, this area is considered the industrial region of Russia. Regions of the Krasnoyarsk Territory occupy a leading position in the energy sector of the state. A large metallurgical complex has been created. Also, the region has developed the non-ferrous metallurgical industry, mechanical engineering, metalworking, woodworking and the chemical industry. In recent years, the oil industry has also been developing: the Vankor oil and gas field has been commissioned since 2009.
