The national symbols of this country do not have such a long history, but it would still be interesting for anyone who wants to learn more about the world to get acquainted with it, especially when you consider how original it stands out in comparison with the emblems of other African states.
What does the flag of Somalia look like?
The panel has a traditional rectangular shape with a length that refers to the width in a proportion of three to two. The flag of Somalia is fully executed in bright blue, and in the center is a white five-pointed star. Such symbols have been used in the country since 1960, when the state joined the United Nations. At this moment, independence was finally gained from Italy, to which the territories belonged from the end of the nineteenth century. Five rays of a white star symbolize the number of historical areas where representatives of the country live. These are British and Italian Somalia, as well as states such as Kenya, Djibouti and Ethiopia.
National emblem
Interestingly, such colors were used not only for the panel. The emblem and flag of Somalia look almost identical. The heraldic symbol is based on a blue shield. Its edges are outlined with a gold border, and on top of it is a royal crown of the same color. However, the flag of Somalia, the photographs of which are known to every traveler, is complemented by a white star, and the coat of arms uses completely different designs. On the sides of the heraldic shield are supported by two leopards that stand on their hind legs - these are characteristic animals for this African region. They rely on palm leaves and crossed spears, which symbolizes the hope for peace and, at the same time, the rather belligerent nature of the inhabitants of this country.
History of occurrence
How did the modern flag of Somalia appear, a photo of which can be seen in this article? It is a reference to the symbolism of the former state, which was Italian territory. This explains the lack of black, green or red on the canvas - the colors characteristic of the African country. The flag of Italian Somalia was adopted in 1954. However, the process of combining territories is still ongoing. Only part of the country uses common symbols, while the rest are distinguished by their own panels and their laws.
In the provinces of Galmudug and Northland, the flag of Somalia is used. In Puntland, tricolor with horizontal equal stripes is used, the upper of which is blue with a five-pointed star, the middle is white, and the lower is green.
In Somaliland, the basis of the symbol also becomes three stripes. The upper one is dark green, in the middle is white, and under it is dark red. An Islamic slogan is written above, and in the center is a black star with five rays.
Finally, the Jubaland state entity has its own flag. This cloth, which is vertically divided into two equal parts. The pole is bright red, and the free edge is made in light green. In the center of the panel is a white five-pointed star.
