Hope, as you know, is an earthly compass. But is she really good? We will answer this question, and besides, we will find out hope is what it is and what it happens?
Value
Of course, the first thing to do is open the dictionary and check what is written there. On the desired page we read the definition, which consists of two values:
- Belief in the possibility of a joyful or auspicious event. For example: “The interview went well. There is hope for a job. ”
- The one who is hoped for, who must bring joy and prosperity. For example: “Gennady Petrovich is the hope of our entire research institute.”
There is also the colloquial option “all hope for someone,” that is, only this incognito can help out and help, sometimes it’s not a person, but something, for example, a bus or taxi that arrives on time.
Hope is a rather simple concept and at the same time mysterious. There is nothing more surprising than hope, especially when it is irrational. But more on that later, first the replacement words.
Synonyms
The word as a person needs a couple. Otherwise, the dictionary becomes poor and meager. We will not let irreparable happen. Therefore, our list of synonyms is as follows:
- aspirations;
- chance;
- expectation;
- perspective;
- illusion;
- dream;
- Vera;
- chimera;
- anticipation;
- premonition;
- hope.
Synonyms show how broad the meaning of the definition of “hope” is. Expectations, which may be based on some rational beliefs, and futile dreams, flickering forebodings, and much more fall into one group. Therefore, in order to maximally correctly express a thought, one must precisely understand what kind of hope a person has in mind or what feeling he is worried about in principle. Maybe this is not hope at all, but something else. We turn to the interpretation of the concept.
Factual aspirations
In fact, probably, there are many types of hope, but for simplicity and convenience we will take only two: rational and irrational. For the former, there are prerequisites in reality; for the latter, they are not and cannot be, since something inevitable is happening.
When a child hopes that his mother will bring something tasty from the store, he subconsciously relies on a past experience that convinces him: mother will not forget about her child.
When a student prepares for the exam all night, he still hopes that he will come across the ticket that he knows best in order to successfully pass the test.
Remember the great movie and S. King’s book Shawshank Redemption? When Andy Dufrain says that hope is the most wonderful thing in the world, because by that time he had already escaped from prison, but even when he was in custody, he still had a chance to escape. Ah, this is a cunning and secretive wall in the cell. In other words, despite the fact that Andy seemed a lot crazy, he had no illusions.
Hope desperate and causeless
But it happens to man to harbor illusions. For example, a student who expects to pass the exam without learning the subject. And in this sense, there is an interesting point: what if a person has a certain freebie limit, given to him by God or fate? And so on the exam, such a number will pass, and in a more important case, the person will not slip. But let's not fall into mysticism. As a rule, even if before the exam at night you lean out of the window and shout: "Catch a freebie!" - then nothing will come of it. Need to prepare - this is the surest sign of passing the exam.
When a fatal diagnosis is made, it is common for a person to dream of recovery, and his whole environment supports this belief in a possible positive outcome. Yes, miracles do happen, but overall statistics are against the healing of hopeless patients. Why is hoping for something like this bad? Just because treatment takes away valuable time that could be spent more productively. What is the point of being treated if there is no result? In this case, the question of what is hope implies the answer: evil, which takes away a person’s strength and makes him rely on fate.
But there are borderline situations where it is not clear that hope is illusory or real. For example, when a believer hopes to continue life after death, no one can tell him that he is mistaken, because there are no sufficient arguments for and against. Once, Gabriel Marcel, the founder of French existentialism, said that our world implies absolute despair, but that is why it is accompanied by the same strong hope. Sometimes, hope is really a compass, thanks to which a person lives.
Does waiting interfere with a person?
As already clear from the previous story, it all depends on what exactly the person is waiting for. If he relies on a miracle, then, of course, this kind of delay is pointless, and if on some outcome that is possible, then why not?
Hope can be neither good nor evil, it changes its moral clothes depending on the specific situation. But still, in almost any case, action is better than expectation, because the latter fills a person with anxiety, a sense of powerlessness and the inevitability of fate, and if he is busy, then there is no time for mournful thoughts. Action draws negative energy onto itself and transforms it into productive changes in the external state of the world or the internal mood of the individual.
We examined not only the meaning of the word “hope”, but also the essence of the phenomenon. Synonyms make it clear that a noun implies a scattering of interpretations with varying degrees of validity. The latter is dictated by the specific parameters of the situation.
