Gorky film studio was founded in 1915 in Moscow. The history of the company began with a single shooting pavilion, which was located on Butyrskaya Street. The owner of this pavilion was Moscow merchant Mikhail Trofimov, and the company itself was called the film studio "Rus."

During the First World War, the import of paintings from abroad became a problem. Trofimov caught a favorable trend and organized the release of domestic paintings. Mostly preference was given to Russian classics. Performers in the film adaptations were actors from the Moscow Art Theater.
