The ridge is a small hill with an elongated shape, or a series of low hills. Such relief phenomena occur as a result of strong winds or as a result of meltwater deposits.

The ridge is also a long strip of plowed land. It is in this meaning that the word is used most often. True, as a rule, in a diminutive form. Example: "onions and carrots are often grown on the same bed."

Among archaisms in the Russian language there is such a word as “to shake”. This verb is sometimes found in modern fiction. What does shake mean? It is to walk, march, approach, advance. Example: "The oprichniks are coming for the king."
From the verb the adjective "future" is formed, that is, "future", "that which will happen soon." And the noun, the meaning of which we are considering, has a common etymology with these words.
"Ridge" is a word that can be found in poetic works. For example, in Bunin’s poem "Loneliness". Describing the dull autumn landscape, the author says "the clouds go ridge after ridge." In the poem, this word, of course, is not used in the meaning of a plowed strip of land or a relief phenomenon. The noun "ridge" is synonymous with "series." This word has a third meaning - a series of slowly moving objects. Example: a ridge of clouds.
Ridge sands
Even the one who had never been in the desert saw, of course, in the photographs huge masses of sand, onto which, as if deliberately, someone had applied a strict, strikingly even drawing. These are ridge sands. They are parallel long hills that can stretch for several kilometers. Ridge sands are found in Australia, Africa, Central Asia.
Toponyms
A small river called ridge flows in the Moscow region and flows into the lake. In the Vologda region there is a village in which, according to the inventory of 2002, only 25 people live. Probably, the name "Ridge" arose due to the features of the relief characteristic of the area where the village is located.
This toponym on the map of Russia is found twice more. Two villages with the same name are located in the Novgorod region. The first is in the Solovetsky district, the second - in the Krestetsky district.
