Steaua Football Club - Romania's Pride and Hope

The Romanian football club Steaua was founded seventy years ago and until the end of the 90s was the property of the country's Ministry of Defense. In 1998 he stood out in an independent sports organization. Today it is the most titled club in Romania.

History of FC Steaua

Over its long history, the team has won the national championship more than twenty-five times and almost always won prizes. The worst result is sixth in the 2008-2009 season. Football players have won the country's Cup more than twenty times.

In 1986, the Romanian “army team” succeeded in what every professional player dreams of: the team won the European Champions Cup, defeating the Spanish “Barcelona” in the penalty shoot-out. In 1987, she beat Dynamo (Kiev) and became the owner of the European Super Cup. Two years later, the Romanians could repeat the success, but in the final match they lost to the Italian “Milan”. Since then, it has been possible to reach the maximum in the semi-finals of European tournaments.

The team is based in the city of Bucharest. The Steaua Football Club more often than others won the country's Super Bowl (six times) and reached the final three more times.

Bucharest Derby

Everyone knows what the “El Classico" is when there are two giants: Barcelona and Real Madrid. The most important confrontation in Romania is considered a match between the football club “Steaua” and the Bucharest “Dynamo”. The stadiums where the teams play are packed on such days, because initially (until 1989) it was also an eternal confrontation between two departments: the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of the Interior.

Here they really love and know how to play football. The statistics of personal meetings are approximately equal, but the capital's derby often ends with clashes of fans, setting fire to the fire during the game and other incidents. In December 1987, nearly 20,000 fans rallied in a fight at the stadium, resulting in the collapse of the eastern stand. After the game, unrest continued in the city. To calm down troubled football fans, it was necessary to connect the National Army.

From 1992 to 2000, Dynamo could not beat the “army” and the club's fans could not influence the unbeatable drought.

On May 25, 2011, the Bucharest derby had to be moved 180 km from the capital of Romania.

The biggest tragedy

On June 23, 1988, the final game for the Romanian Cup was held. To ensure the rule of law, an additional 10,000 personnel were allocated. Account in this confrontation was opened in the middle of the first half by the football club “Steaua”. Further attacked only Dynamo, but managed to recoup only in the last minutes of the match. And, when the fans were already tuned for extra time, “CSKA” scored the second goal, which after a short pause was canceled by the side referee because of the “offside”. Players of FC Steaua in response to such an injustice defiantly left the field, not wanting to end the meeting. The judges, having conferred, awarded the victory to Dynamo.

That evening, 30,000 people converged on the main square of Bucharest. The police could not do anything. The result is more than 1000 dead. Then the Romanian authorities gave the order to open fire to kill and the death toll increased by 15 times.

Now, in place of this terrible tragedy, a modest monument has been erected - a small cross.
