What is summer reading? This is an extremely important part of the educational process. In addition, teachers consider it a practically indispensable tool for the development of the student. Issuing lists of literature for the summer, teachers have several goals, including:
- vocabulary expansion;
- improvement of reading technique;
- preparation for the new school year;
- development of a child's speech and memory.

The list of references for grade 5 can be divided into 4 sections. These are myths and fairy tales, works of foreign authors, domestic writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. All books are multi-genre - there is prose, poetry, and even such a genre as fairy tales, plays. Teachers recommend reading at least 6-7 pages daily in order to have time to master the entire list of recommended literature for grade 5 over the summer months.
The most voluminous work on the list is the story of Robinson Crusoe, written by Daniel Defoe. This is about a third of the entire list of summer books.
Tales and myths
A special place in the list of literature for the 5th grade is occupied by the myths of Ancient Greece. About the exploits of the most famous Greek hero is narrated by the myth of Hercules. Students learn how Hercules was accepted into the service of the king, fought with the hydra, visited the kingdom of the Amazons, and how he cleaned the stall of Avgius in just one day. About how the Earth, the world, immortal gods came from Chaos, the myth “About the creation of the world” will tell. No less interesting will be the story of Zeus: the myth of this Greek god tells of his birth, childhood, adventures and battles.
There are interesting fairy tales in the summer literature list for the 5th grade: both Russian folk and foreign ones. Educators recommend reading the following over the summer:

The poem was written on the 25th anniversary of the defeat of the French in the war of 1812.
Schoolchildren will be able to learn about serfdom in Russia from the story of I. S. Turgenev using the example of a deaf-mute janitor Gerasim. In the work, the author talks about the life of serfs, that they were completely subordinate to their masters, could not fend for themselves, could not love the one they wanted. No less interesting for children will be the following works: the poem "Frost, Red Nose" by Nikolai Nekrasov and the story "Surgery" by Anton Chekhov.
Soviet writers to children
The literature for reading grade 5 includes works by Soviet writers. Amazing, with unusual plots, beautiful heroes, the Ural tales of Pavel Petrovich Bazhov from the first minutes win the hearts of readers. From the tales you can learn about the mistress of the copper mountain, the stone flower and the malachite box.
It is necessary to read V. P. Astafyev's "Horse with a pink mane." In this story, the example of a little boy shows the formation of personality, the moral growth of a person and the formation of character. Foreign literature
From the work “Robinson Crusoe” by London-based writer Daniel Defoe, we learn about the life and adventures of a young man who came to an uninhabited island and lived there for several years.
It will be interesting to read about two tomboy boys, whose names are familiar to everyone - Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, about their friendship in the work of American writer M. Twain "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer."
One of the most profound works in the list of books for fifth graders is The Legend of Kish by Jack London. The main character is an Eskimo boy, fair and brave. Literary critics note: this story is written in an unusually moving and even autobiographical way - little Jack London, like his hero, suffered many difficulties in childhood.
The child will be able to laugh heartily behind the book about the funny inventor Baron Munchausen. Although the stories seem completely fantastic, they are based on the stories of a real person! The real Baron Munchausen was a military man; for some time he served in Russia. Rudolf Raspe only processed the stories recorded by someone and published them.

No less interesting works for grade 5 in the additional literature list. You can get acquainted with the myths and legends of the Slavs, folklore. The story of the writer from Sweden Astrid Lindgren, “The Kid and Carlson, who lives on the roof” will also not leave anyone indifferent. Probably, all the children of Russia saw the adaptation of this work - a cartoon of the same name, but reading from this will not become less interesting.
