An echo sounder or sonar is a device that uses high-frequency radiation to collect data on the status of the bottom of the reservoir and the location of the fish. It consists of an emitter and a device for receiving radiation.
A radiation source transmits electrical pulses to a sensor, converting them into sound waves. This radiation comes out of the speaker and goes to the bottom of the pond. Reflecting from the bottom surface and objects under water, the beam returns to the device and is picked up by the microphone. By how much the sound wave is delayed, you can determine the distance to the object, which allows you to form a picture of the bottom topography and determine the location of moving objects, that is, fish. This picture is shown on the display.
The work of any echo sounder is based on complex calculations. Therefore, its main detail is a microcomputer, which processes information and provides a picture on the monitor.
Types of echo sounders
According to radiation indicators, all sonars are divided into:
- Single beam. They work at a depth of up to thirty-two meters. The angle of their coverage is twenty-four degrees.
- Double beam. Their working depth is up to seventy meters, and the coverage angle is sixty degrees.
- Multipath. The bottom of the reservoir in them is clearly visible to a depth of thirty-five meters. The expansion angle is ninety degrees. Using a similar device, you can see the presence of fish on the right and left side of the vessel.
- 3D - fishfinders have six emitters. A unique scanning system allows you to display a three-dimensional image.
