Helen was born in 1963 in the settlement of Betpage, located on the island of Long Island (New York), in the family of a television worker Gerald Slater and lawyer Alice Joan. She studied at the public school of William A. Shine Great Neck South High School, and then transferred to the High School of Performing Arts, where she studied music and acting.
