Club career

The football career of most Soviet players began in various amateur teams of the most contingent towns and villages of the country. Pavel Gusev also began his football career in amateur groups.

The biography of the future USSR Cup holder and the captain of the Rostov SKA began in the city of Torez, Donetsk region. Here he played for the local team, which took part in regional competitions. The young promising footballer was noticed by representatives of the club with the revolutionary name Barricades. It turns out that in the beginning of the 70s the Volgograd “Rotor” was so called, playing at that time in the second regional league of the USSR championship.

As part of this team, Pavel played four seasons. He held 104 meetings, scored 13 goals. In 1975, not seeing the prospects for further growth, he decides to change the situation. At the beginning of the football season, Gusev became the footballer of Kazan Rubin. But here he was completely disappointed. After spending six months in the team’s double, Pavel couldn’t get into the club’s main team. In the fall he comes back.

During this time, the Barricade club became the Rotor. Although the team changed its name, the club’s task remained the same: a stable performance in the zone championship of the second league without the desire to improve in class.

paul gusev biography

Having played a year for the Volgograd club (32 matches, 6 goals), he receives an invitation from the Rostov SKA team. Here, by and large, it took place as a footballer Pavel Gusev. In this club, he turned into one of the strongest midfielders of the USSR championship.

For seven long years Gusev remained the captain and the best footballer of the Rostov team. 199 times he went to the football field, defending the honor of SKA. In these matches, he scored 31 goals against rival teams.

The most important football match in his life Pavel Gusev played in the spring of 1981. On May 9, in Moscow, on Victory Day, at the Central Lenin Stadium, the final match of the Cup of the country took place, in which Moscow Spartak and Rostov SKA met.

Gusev Pavel Panteleevich

The irony was that the head coach of the Rostov club was Vladimir Fedotov , the son-in-law of the Moscow team's coach Konstantin Beskov. Evil tongues said that the meeting would be predictable, family relations on a green lawn, that the Moscow team would not miss such a chance, that in the end the football leadership itself was interested in the victory of Spartak as a stronger representative of the country in future battles. But everything happened according to a different scenario.

Naturally, as a stronger and more technical team, Muscovites rushed to the attack from the first minutes, and several times only the skill and reaction of the Rostov goalkeeper saved the army from a sure goal. The apogee of the match was the appointment of a dubious penalty against the Rostov club. And it must happen that the best penalty kicker of Spartak Alexander Mirzoyan shot past the target. And in a matter of minutes before the end of regular time, Alexander Zavarov and Sergey Andreev did what silenced the country's main stadium: the most accurate pass of the first, the calculating shot of the second, and the ball in the goal of Dasaev. The desperate bulk of Muscovites did not bring success. The referee's whistle heralded the end of the bout.

Team captain Pavel Gusev raises the Cup of the Soviet Union above his head, and the SKA Rostov team wins its first and last significant football trophy in the Soviet and, as it turned out later, post-Soviet period. In 1966, the army team won the silver medal of the USSR championship, but such a tremendous success was not and so far, unfortunately, is not expected in the near future.

In the same championship in 1981, the team performed extremely unsuccessfully and left the major league. Gusev played one season with the club in the first league, after which he ended his playing career at the age of 29. There were proposals from CSKA, Dynamo (Moscow), but the player decided to finish active appearances in big football. It’s sad.

International matches

There were exactly four of them in the career of a football player. They took place as part of the Cup Cup. In the 1/16 finals of SKA, the Turkish club Ankaragucu defeated in the sum of two meetings. And in 1/8 of the tournament, the Rostovites were defeated by the West German Eintracht team.
