The fantastic action movie Star Troopers (actors: C.V. Dean, D. Richards, D. Meyer, N.P. Harris, D. Half a century ago, Robert A. Heinlein managed to predict the development of globalism and totalitarianism in a post-industrial society, and Paul Verhoeven impudently and with a fair amount of cynicism managed to film a novel that has not lost its relevance. However, it is impossible to unequivocally affirm that the picture strictly corresponds to the literary source, it will be more correct to notice - the tape was created based on the novel.
With a claim to super-performance
“Starship Troopers” is a film whose actors could not resist the offer to take part in the filming of the author of the cult fiction fighters “Remember Everything”, “Robocop” and the sensational “Basic Instinct”. It is not surprising that the director meticulously considered the candidacies of the actors, because he swung at the super-performance. As a true professional, realizing the win-win idea, Verhoeven turned to his usual subgenre of science fiction. Screenwriting Paul entrusted to Edward Neumeier, who used only the main motive of the book, making more use of his personal experience in writing scripts for futuristic action films. From Robocop, the director invited Phil Tippet, a leading specialist in visual effects, who realized his exuberant fantasy, especially in the frames of bloody battles.
Verkhoven invited Michael Ironside from the cast group “Remember Everything”, who was supposed to share his experience with the entire casting of the film “Starship Troopers”. The actors were perplexed why the director’s favorite this time appeared before the viewer not in the usual noble appearance.
Plot. Stamps and patterns
The storytelling begins with the acquaintance of the viewer with the distant future of mankind, in which the united state is trying to resist the attacks of vile giant bugs. In the sequence of events, in constructing the structure of the picture, the director deliberately applies the stamps that exist in many military films. During the filming of the film "Starship Troopers", the actors established correspondences between the earthly battles of the past (landing in Normandy, a tank battle on the Malakhov Hill) and space battles. In addition to transferring template situations, the director intentionally manipulates the characters' characters, and quite ironically. Among the heroes of the tape there is also an ambitious recruit, under the tutelage of an experienced sergeant, turning into a seasoned warrior. And a sharp, tough, but fair lieutenant, dying in an unequal battle with the enemy. Frontline romance, love and the predicted death of a fighting girlfriend. In general, for half of the audience Verhoeven's project “Starship Troopers” (the actors also disagreed) looks like a real comic, for the other part - an ironic parody of all kinds of patriotic war films.
The cast. Leading actors
Casper Van Dean is an American actor who gained worldwide fame after the embodiment of the image of Johnny Rico. Thanks to this role, Wang Ding began to receive a lot of offers from directors and producers. Since 1998 he is a sought-after actor, his filmography is impressive: "Tarzan and the Lost City", "Sleepy Hollow" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." In 2008, he again had to become Johnny Rico in "Starship Troopers 3: Marauder." Although reviews of his work in the 1997 project were mixed, many criticized Van Dean's acting skills. In general, Casper was not the only one who smiled at luck after the release of the action movie "Starship Troopers". Actors, whose photos adorn all the posters, consider their participation in Verhoeven's project a significant milestone in their careers.
Dina Meyer considers the image of Dizzy Flores in the "Starship Troopers" the best role in her career. It’s hard to agree with her, because her other heroines (Jane in “Johnny Mnemonic”, Kara in “Dragon Heart”, detective Kerry in “Saw”) are no less juicy and colorful. The actress received her well-deserved award only in 2003 as the best supporting actress in the film “State of the Mind”.
Minor, but no less bright
Star Troopers is a film whose actors played exclusively positive characters. Unfortunately, even among performers of secondary and episodic roles, there is no characteristic and pronounced image of a negative character, the creators gave the role of antagonists to spiders.
Jake Busey, from early childhood clowning on film expeditions, played Private Levy. After there were secondary roles in the paintings “March Cats”, “Identification” (2003). Today, the actor changed his calling and realizes himself as a drummer and bass player.
Michael Ironside showed brilliant professionalism, having earned positive reviews from both film critics and ordinary viewers, who were unusual to see him as a good character. Traditionally, the actor got the role of villains or brutal military, it happened both at once. By the way, ironically or at the request of the authors, all the characters of the actor in almost every film lose their limbs. In Star Troopers, the hero Michael had a prosthetic arm, and his legs were later eaten by a tanker bug.
