Moffat Stephen: biography and filmography

Many love and hate him. He is criticized and receives the most prestigious awards, and even in 2015 he became a holder of the Order of the British Empire for his merits in the development of dramaturgy. But basically, Stephen Moffat is known to our viewers for his work on such series as Sherlock and Doctor Who.

Study and first successes

It all started with the Scottish city of Paisley. It was here that Moffat was born on November 18, 1961. Stephen (his full name is Stephen William Moffat) spent his childhood in this town and graduated from high school, and then entered the University of Glasgow (studied at the Faculty of Philology) and even became a bachelor in English. After graduating from university, he got a job as a school teacher. It was while working at school that he first sat down to write the play War Zones and the musical Knifer, which successfully survived the performances of the school theater.

After some time, the school administration received an appeal from television producers with a request to assist in the creation of a series about the school newspaper. It just so happened that the person requested was Stephen's father. Knowing about his son’s hobby to write good texts, he advised him to turn to him. The producers were very pleased with what Steven suggested in the script, and Moffat Jr. made his first successful step in the television career.

The series called Press Grand was successfully broadcast on screens from 1989 to 1993. Moffat was part of this project. Stephen finished work on this television project in the 90th and, in the wake of his first success, began to think about continuing his television career. The producer of the television show Bob Spears arranged a meeting with Stephen TV broadcaster Andre Plaschinski, who was about to start a new show. The series Joking Apart turned out to be quite self-ironic, because the script was largely borrowed from personal life (the fact is that during the work on the series Moffat got into trouble in this regard). The story of the husband, screenwriter, wife and wife's lover was very warmly received by the public and even put forward on the Emmy.

In 1997, the creative tandem of Moffat-Plaschinski released a new project - Chalk. But, unfortunately, the comedy story about high school students was closed by the channel. With the advent of 2000, the first episode of the Love for Six project was released. This time the story turned out to be optimistic - it was based on a relationship, or rather its beginning, with Sue Wert (his second wife), who also worked on television. Later, Stephen worked on the American version of the series, but the work did not earn such popularity as its British original.

World recognition

The year 2004 became one of the most important in the writer's career - he was offered a job on restarting the famous Doctor Who (later fans especially liked the episode "Forest of the Dead"). Stephen Moffat is the only one who could do it with dignity. He, of course, could not miss the chance to participate in a cult project, a fan of which he had been since childhood. Thanks to his talent, the scriptwriter breathed a second life into the series, and the show blossomed with wild popularity, and Stephen received more than one prestigious award. And it should also be noted that Moffat had a “scripted hand” in the cartoon “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” (2011), directed by Stephen Spielberg and Peter Jackson (director of The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit trilogy).

Once upon a train

With the advent of 2010, an event occurred that hurricane swept across the cinema world and swept everything in its path, caused by Stephen Moffat - “Sherlock”. The modern adaptation of the classic works of Sherlock Holmes is more than a bold experiment that not everyone will decide on. And it turned out that the efforts were not in vain - the series was loved all over the world, and the actors who played the main roles became one of the most popular and discussed people in the world. However, all this could not have been if not for one train ride from Cardiff to London ...

Sherlock is the product of the hard work of two screenwriters: Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss. Both became friends while working on one of the episodes of Doctor Who. When returning from filming to London, sitting on the train, friends suddenly found out that both were big fans of the detective works of Conan Doyle. Having talked about this topic, Stephen and Mark came to a mutual desire to transfer Victorian Sherlock Holmes to our days. What would he be then? If the classic Holmes smokes a pipe and wears a hunting hat, then the modern one would most likely wear a nicotine patch and use a laptop and smartphone. And Watson, who originally wrote adventure stories, would now start a blog and call the detective not Mr. Holmes, but Sherlock. And so on…

The writers were so carried away by this venture that they were surprised: why hadn’t it occurred to anyone yet? And since no one has done this, it is they who must do it - Getisse and Moffat. Stephen talked about this conversation to his wife, who was also inspired by the idea and subsequently became the producer of the series. Perhaps you should not once again talk about his wild popularity. We only note that the creators did not expect such success. What was a free fantasy became a general stir from season to season. And besides, Moffat Stephen promised that the fourth season of “Sherlock” will be the most unexpected and dramatic, further fueling the public’s expectation. Well, let's wait, because these guys know how to surprise ...
