In a modern school, much attention is paid to extracurricular activities in order to attract children to the educational process. This is done to increase the motivation of children to study subjects.
Geography is a vital science, but a very small number of children are interested in studying it. One way to increase motivation is to hold a week of geography at school. In addition, this subject week should correspond to the issues of
professional orientation of children and develop love for their native land.
Event organisation
Carrying out this event of an integrated composition requires the solution of a number of organizational issues. These include the following:
- drawing up a plan of implementation;
- detailed development of the event itself;
- inclusion of various contests, quizzes, conferences, presentations of creative projects in the script;
- organization of meetings with people whose professional activities require geographical knowledge.
When conducting a creative project called “Geography Week at School”, the development of activities requires compliance with the planning compiled by the teacher.
Event Planning
To make a plan of the geography week at school, the teacher must first outline for himself the main points of the event that will correspond to the goals of the meeting. Then it is worth choosing the best forms for conducting, based on the age of the students and their interests. And only after that it is possible to draw up a final plan of the geography week at school, which 10-14 days before the event should be posted on the notice board for review. An approximate action plan is presented in the table.
Day of the week / day | Planned Activities |
Monday | School-wide ruler. Geography quizzes (held during breaks). |
Tuesday | The game "Clever and clever" (holding after classes for students in grades 9, the audience - everyone). Exhibition of creative works on geography (crosswords, drawings, mapping of the area). |
Wednesday | Geographical dictation (time - changes). The game "Geographic window dressing" (conducting after classes for students in grades 7-8). |

Saturday | Summarizing. Solemn line on the occasion of the closing of the subject week. |
Students can also be involved in planning.
Event Design
After the plan is drawn up, you can proceed to the direct development of the event itself. Since the volume of work is very large, a geography teacher can attract related subjects to help teachers, as well as a creative asset consisting of students of different classes. They can help with the organization of the exhibition of works and the design of the premises.
The scenario “Week of geography at school” (development of events) can be taken from the archive of the educational institution. You just need to remember that all children are individual and still have to redo the plan for a specific team.
In the preparation of such a large-scale project as “Geography Week at School”, activities can be of the following types:
- riddle contests;
- quizzes aimed at the application of science in human life;
- excursions “Corners of the native land”, “Streets familiar to me”, “How the weather station works”, “Open spaces of the Universe”.
Correction school and subject weeks
Children from correctional schools are probably even more in need of subject weeks, since they need to master basic knowledge, skills in subjects with a view to further employment.
A geography week in a correctional school should have a slightly different content than a general educational one. In this case, a scenario is required, according to which a trip to the world of this science is most often proposed.
Usually the children of these educational institutions are very actively involved in a project called “Geography Week at School”. The development of activities includes creative assignments on the subject, and they should also be aimed at developing the practical skills of students. For example, tasks: “How to navigate in the forest”, “Navigate the compass”, “Read the map”. Mind games are certainly possible. But questions must be tailored to the specifics of children.
Geography and intersubject communications
At the moment, in connection with the emergence of a new federal state educational standard, very much attention has been paid to interdisciplinary relations in schools. Therefore, when drawing up a project called “Geography Week at School”, the development of activities should include tasks of this nature. Examples will be presented below.
Geography + biology (riddle):
I am in the oceans
I break ships there.
If you assign a letter,
I will fly in the air. (Reef - vulture.)
Geography + literature . The children are given the task to recall works of literature where geographical objects are mentioned in the title. ("Travel from St. Petersburg to Moscow", "Borodino", "Quiet Flows the Don".)
Geography + Russian language . Students need to write Russian proverbs in which geographical objects are present. ("The language will bring to Kiev"; "as if it had sunk into the river.")
Analysis of the event
The development of a geography week at school in the end (after it) should have another important point - a written analysis of the event.
The subject teacher must hold this event twice:
- together with the children, after hearing their opinions on the positive and negative aspects of the event;
- introspection, in this case, the teacher will have to analyze in detail each individual moment and assess the relevance of its use.
The compiled written analysis is brought to the teaching staff at the nearest pedagogical council. After which a verdict is issued on the possibility of using this kind of extracurricular activities in subsequent years.
Afterword
Summing up, we can say that the subject week of geography at school depends on the following factors:
- timely preparation of all organizational aspects of the event;
- active interaction with teachers of related subjects and their participation in the event;
