Actor Tom Selleck was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1945, into the family of Marta Selleck, a nee Jagger (1921–2017) and Robert Dean Selleck (1921–2001), who was a real estate investor. On the paternal side, Tom Selleck is a descendant of the English colonist David Selleck, who moved to Massachusetts from Somerset, England, in 1633. Along this line, Tom is part of the 11th generation of his family, born in North America.
The Selleck family moved to Sherman Oaks, California when he was a child. He has an older brother named Robert, a sister named Martha and a younger brother named Daniel. The future actor graduated from Grant High School in 1962.
Studying at the University
Working as a model, Selleck studied at the University of Southern California for a scholarship, and made good progress in basketball, where he played for the USC Trojans men's basketball team. He is a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and a member of the Trojan Knights student fraternity.
When he received his degree in business administration, the head of the university acting group suggested that he try himself on stage. And Tom did very well, because of what he thought about his career. He then studied acting at the Playhouse Beverly Hills School under the direction of Milton Katselas. Soon after, the future actor went to war in Vietnam. He served in the 160th Infantry Regiment of the National Guard of the California Army from 1967 to 1973.

First fame
Tom Selleck - an affordable but relatively inexperienced actor - spent years playing in second-rate films and little interest in the entertainment industry. He quit acting for a while after starring Thomas Magnum in Magnum, PI.
The company he worked for didn’t want to take him to other projects, so Selleck had to transfer the role of Indiana Jones, which he had originally been told, to Star Wars graduate Harrison Ford.
Tom Selleck starred in the 1972 film Daughters of Satan. In 1979, he participated in Concrete Cowboys with Jerry Reed. He also starred in several roles during and after the series Magnum, which made him famous. Among the actor's most notable roles were police detectives, like what he played in the Runaway movie.
Among the films of Tom Selleck of that time, the tape “Three Men and a Baby” and Quigley Down Under stand out. He considers one of his best roles in these paintings. Other lead roles include Three People and Little Lady. In the filmography of Tom Selleck, the films High Road to China, Her Alibi, Innocent Man, Christopher Columbus: The Discovery, Mr. Baseball are highlighted.
Further career
Selleck is an energetic man, amateur shooter and small arms collector. These interests led him to the role of cowboys in Western films, starting with his role as border marshal Orrin Sackett in the 1979 film Sacketts, Jeff Osterhage in Western Legends, as well as Glenn Ford and Ben Johnson.
"Magnum" - the most famous role of Selleck
Selleck played the role of Thomas Magnum in 1980 after filming six other pilot series of projects that never came out. Magnum was a former U.S. Navy officer, veteran of the SEAL Special Operations Unit during the Vietnam War, and then a member of the Maritime Intelligence Agency (a fictional version of the Maritime Intelligence Agency). He resigned from the Navy to become a private investigator living in Hawaii.
The series lasted for 8 seasons and 163 episodes until 1988, giving the actor an Emmy Award in 1984. Selleck was known for his mustache, a Hawaiian aloha shirt, a baseball cap with the Detroit Tigers team, and a 1911A1.45 ACP pistol.
1990s
In the mid-nineties, Selleck played the role of Richard Burke, Monica's boyfriend since the end of the second season of the hugely successful Friends series. Richard was a divorced ophthalmologist who was a friend of Monica's parents. And initially their romance was hiding from her parents. The relationship eventually ended with Richard’s reluctance to commit to having children, although Selleck made several additional appearances in later episodes.
In February 1998, Tom starred in a comedy for CBS called The Closer. In it, he embodied in Jack McLaren, the legendary publicist who heads the new marketing firm. His clients included Ed Asner, David Krumgolts, and Penelope Ann Miller. Despite good funding and high expectations from the actor who glorified the series Magnum, PI, low ratings forced the show to close after ten episodes.
Zero
Since 2005, Selleck starred as Jesse Stone's lawyer in a series of films based on the novels of Robert B. Parker. To date, the film series consists of nine films, the most recent of which were released in October 2015. In addition to the main role, the actor has recently been the producer of the series. The fifth film from the Jesse Stone series, Thin Ice, has nothing to do with Parker’s novels, being shot according to Selleck’s original script.
Tom joined the cast of the NBC drama "Las Vegas" at the beginning of the fifth season on September 28, 2007. He played AJ Cooper, the new owner of Montecito Casino. He replaced James Caan, who left the series in the same episode. This was Selleck's first regular role in a drama show since Thomas Magnum.
Movie work
Selleck has appeared in a number of films made for TV in recent years. In particular, he sought to help restore Western popularity, often playing typical and slightly clichéd characters in this genre, but given the current context.
Selleck was offered the main role of Mitch Buchanan in the Baywatch film, but he refused it because he did not want to be perceived as a sex symbol. The role ultimately passed to David Hasselhoff.
Personal life of Tom Selleck
From 1971 to 1982, Selleck was married to the model Jacqueline Ray. To do this, he even adopted her beloved son, left over from a previous marriage. In 1985, the actor met the British dancer Jilly Mack. Two years later, they married, which turned out to be surprisingly strong and long, having successfully passed the test of time.
Selleck and his family live in Thousand Oaks Westlake, California, on a 60-acre (24 ha) avocado farm in Hidden Valley, formerly owned by Dean Martin. In a 2012 interview with People magazine, Selleck said that he wants to live and work on his farm: “I like to go out and work on the farm, doing any job, from securing roads to sweeping yards. I hate going to the gym because I prefer to work out outdoors, cycling or doing my daily farming duties. And I work much cheaper than anyone I could hire for this job. ” At the same time, Selleck said that he does not like avocados.
The actor was once charged with allegedly transferring approximately 1.4 million full gallons of water from the Calleguas Municipal Reservoir to a municipal water supply area during a severe drought in California. He settled the lawsuit by paying $ 21,685.55 to the municipal area of Calguaas.
In his youth, Tom Selleck was considered an experienced and skilled beach volleyball player, and often acted as a player in the Outrigger Canoe Club amateur volleyball team in Honolulu. One of the team's players, Dennis Berg, in a summer 2011 issue of Volleyball USA magazine, said of Selleck: “Tom was a great teammate, and I am very thankful for joining such a talented and experienced group that trained a lot and played when it ended his working schedule for filming the Magnum series ... He was always very patient with all of us, and we enjoyed the large number of spectators who came to see our game in tournament matches just because Tom played with us. ”
Despite his talent and impressive appearance, this actor never again achieved the popularity that the role of Magnum had given him at one time. The biography of Tom Selleck, however, is not yet over, and in the future he can expect many new achievements.
