He was born in 1978 in the US city of Nashville, Tennessee, and grew up in Manchester, where he attended the Coffee County Central High School. After school, he went to London and entered King's College London at the Faculty of English Language and Literature. Returning to Tennessee, he applied to Belmont University, where he became a member of the local theater troupe.

DJ Qualls from childhood dreamed of becoming an actor. Two years later, he will play the shy Kyle Edwards, one of the main characters in Todd Phillips' youth adventure comedy Road Adventure.
