It is difficult to imagine a school in which they would never have been given the task of writing an essay. Topics such as “My Family,” “How I Spent the Summer,” “What I Dream of Becoming,” or “Summer Night,” are known to every student. After all, an essay-description is an essential part of the school curriculum.
What is a description essay?
A composition of this kind is no different from other works of art. Its main feature is that most of the sentences in the text answer the question “what?”. In such texts the words “as if”, “as if”, “like” are often found. A description work is a work that contains a description of something. And the main task of the student is to list the main features of nature, object or person. In this case, provide a description of the summer night. An essay of this type differs from artistic narratives by another feature.
Verb, where are you?
If we compare narrative texts and description texts, we can see that in the second case verbs are practically not used. And if used, it is always at the same time. Moreover, all the verbs in the essay-description are imperfect, which, incidentally, is not surprising, because the main task of the student is to talk about what he sees. As one philologist once said, "a description is a verbal photograph." And in order to learn how to “take pictures with words,” it’s worth trying to write the composition “Summer Night”. Description of nature is always given much easier, because everyone is familiar with it.
"Summer night"
But if inspiration still does not come, you can re-read Bunin's poem "Summer Night." Here, nature seems to have its own emotions that are transmitted to people, and its description only emphasizes the relationship between the main characters of the work. In the poem, the author uses avatars and epithets, which make his description more deep, sensual and reliable. An analysis of the poem Summer Night shows that the author describes nature simply and concisely. His words are understandable to everyone, but at the same time he personifies the world around us with a human soul, which is clearly seen in the poem "Summer Night". The description of nature here is directly related to human experiences.
Can this be used?
Bunin’s strategy in describing nature can also be used to write the text “Summer Night”. The composition then should have several introductory elements, for example:
- A lone traveler who admires something.
- A conversation of several people. A small dialogue may well reflect the general atmosphere of a summer night.
- Exclamation. Incidentally inserted into the text is a replica of an exclamation that was heard somewhere far away - another good method to show the relation of nature to man.
You can come up with a lot of similar techniques, the main thing is not to forget that “Summer Night” is a description, not a story of a different genre.
Description Writing Plan
And importantly, when writing an essay, you should follow the generally accepted plan, which consists of three main points:
1. Introduction. That is, it is necessary to write a general description of the described object or phenomenon.
2. The main part. It is worth paying more attention to the details that make up an object or phenomenon. For example, in the composition “Summer Night” the description of the main part may include such concepts as:
- Where did the night fall? That is, in which city, country or village.
- Time. It can be mentioned that if it is the beginning or the middle of summer, then the air is warm and humid, and if the end of this season, then at night you can feel the autumn coolness.
- Weather. It will not be superfluous to pay attention to weather phenomena.
- Actions. Although there are few verbs in essay descriptions, one can describe what is happening in the world: the night is quiet and silent, conversations and laughter are heard or crickets chirp. Similar actions that occur in nature are also part of the description.
3. Conclusion. “Summer Night” is an essay that is full of emotions that are close to everyone, so in conclusion you can describe your own attitude to what is happening, feelings or give predictions about what will happen in the morning or what the next night will bring.
Composition example
“And summer night is a pleasant nostalgia. As if everyone is whispering that there was a time when everything was different. And as soon as this dark cheat descends to the ground, pictures from the past arise in memory.
Nights - they are alike: today, yesterday, or the one that was a year ago, they are like two drops of water. Constellations flicker serenely in the sky, in the distance you can hear the laughter of people who gathered in a small company. The wind blithely runs his hand over the plants and soars in the sky. The light of street lamps pierces the darkness, and the heady aroma of flowers is heard in the air. Every summer night is the same. And yet, for each she has her own.
Each carries in his memory, a special summer night, a time when immeasurable happiness seemed incomprehensible. When there were those who are not there right now. Then it seemed that even the wind rushing briskly among the sleepy branches of trees, the crickets sing the summer anthem: “May good luck come!” And the constellations try to shine as bright as possible. Even a star flying through a black sky seemed to be trying to take part in the general fun.
It’s just that a person is not able to understand the sadness of a star that cannot return to heaven. Similarly, he cannot turn back the clock. And only summer nights will remain a vivid reminder of what used to be fun. After all, everything around remained the same as before, and at the same time, everything became completely different. "
The writing-description does not have to be built from monotonous sentences that describe how warm (fresh, cold, mysterious, dark, fragrant, short) this night is. It is considered acceptable to combine natural phenomena and human emotions, events or memories. Then the essay description will become deeper, more colorful and understandable.
