NBA is ... Meaning, classification, games, abbreviations and best basketball players

NBA is a basketball of the highest level. The homeland of this game is the United States of America. And no matter how it spreads around the world, no matter how popular, the planet’s strongest championship is still the open US championship. NBA is one of the most financially successful leagues.

What is NBA?

Rigidity at a premium

The abbreviation NBA stands for the strongest league in the world of professional basketball. Three latin letters are made up of the phrase "National Basketball Association" ("National Basketball Association"). However, the decoding of the abbreviation NBA does not reveal the essence of the league. From the very moment of the invention of basketball, leagues began to form. NBA was far from the first of them. It appeared after the merger of NBL (National Basketball League) and BAA (Basketball Association of America) on 3.08.1949. Even then, the creators of the new league thought about the name. So now how to decrypt the NBA without recalling its ancestors? In this abbreviation, “traces” of both NBL and AAB are found. In the course of life, the NBA also absorbed the American Basketball Association (ABA), which in fact destroyed the competition for itself.

NBA is ...

The NBA began with just eleven clubs. Now there are 30 professional basketball clubs in it, divided by territorial principle into six divisions and two conferences.

two points

The NBA season has two stages. At the first stage - in the regular season (it matters in the NBA) - the teams of one division play each other and the six teams of their conference four times, with the other four teams of their conference three times, and twice with the teams of another conference. In total, the NBA is 82 matches of the regular season, according to the results of which the participants of the second stage are determined - the playoffs for the Larry O'Brien Cup.

Larry O'Brien Cup

They become the four strongest divisional teams, as well as one team (not one of the winners of the divisions) from the conference, who have the largest percentage of victories in matches played. Next, the draw goes on the Olympic system: teams are divided into pairs, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final play up to four victories of one of the teams in terms of percentage of victories. The winner of the Cup is considered the NBA champion.

NBA are the best players in the world. NBA stars are all included in the Basketball Hall of Fame named after the creator of basketball, Harry Naysmith. To date, over 70 years of association, 115 such people have gathered. A separate story can be told about each of them, but we will restrict ourselves to just a line. In addition to the players listed below, the Hall of Fame includes women, as well as non-American basketball players who have never played in the NBA, but have left a noticeable mark on the history of world basketball. For example, such as our Sergey Belov, Brazilian Oscar Schmidt, Greek Nikos Galis and others. This applies to women: not only American women, but also, for example, the Soviet basketball player Ulyana Semenova.

And here are ours!

Victor Khryapa

Surprisingly, the NBA is also our basketball players:

  • Andrey Kirilenko.
  • Timothy Brains.
  • Alexey Shved.
  • Sergey Karasev.
  • Sergey Bazarevich.
  • Victor Khryapa (pictured).
  • Sergey Monya.
  • Pavel Podkolzin.
  • Yaroslav Korolev.
  • Alexander Kaun.

But in the NBA - this is a league where almost every basketball player in the world wants to play. And getting there is hard. Because what the NBA means for world basketball is hard to evaluate in simple words. That’s why the NBA’s motto, “That's why we play,” fits quite naturally into the situation. Indeed, the attention of all those involved in basketball is riveted to the league: both players, and coaches, and journalists, and fans.
