During training, a contemporary is faced with a long list of mysterious terms that are practically not used in everyday life. So, exact disciplines often rely on the work of the Greeks, and the concept of “octagon” is only a small part. But even it is worth studying more carefully, because the sonorous word can now be heard outside the mathematics room. Fans of sports events will certainly tell you more.
What did they say in the Mediterranean?
All you need to do is look at the image once to come to an understanding. The classic regular octagon with angles of 135 ° is an octagon in its original form. Because in ancient Greek, ὀκτα- denoted "eight", and the addition of γωνία indicated a specific object - "corners". One of those definitions that have long been fixed in science, which is not customary to translate.
And what about the church here?
If you get away from theoretical geometry, it’s easy to find around a lot of real objects based on a recognizable figure. They will tell and show what octagon is, architects and jewelers who first put the concept into practice:
- a building with eight corners and with the same arch;
- special gem cut.
Many ancient temples were built on the basis of such an unusual shape. And jewelry to this day can be seen on the royal regalia that are exhibited in museums or preserved in photographs.
It is found even in sports
Exercise becomes more effective and spectacular if you impose additional restrictions on participants. If you go outside, the octagon is a variant of the breakdance competition. The dancer is trying to perform movements and at the same time not to destroy the fragile structure of cones around the perimeter of the site. This requires a person to be extremely focused and demonstrate maximum skill.
How convenient for "massacre"
And in 1993, the word acquired a new meaning, which is used most often today. Fights without rules gather a lot of spectators, however, the traditional square rings did not look very impressive and prevented the fighters from revealing their full potential. And then the architect Jason Casson created a unique design - the octagon. This design due to wider angles did not allow to hide from the enemy, leaving a lot of free space, which is why fights are more dynamic.
How is everyday communication going
The term is recognizable, as it is rare in everyday speech. To understand its meaning, rely on the context. But if the conversation turned to certain projects and exact disciplines, most likely, the interlocutor implies a pure geometric shape. The townsfolk usually have in mind the venue of the fighting, and then the phrase is revealed as an invitation to become a spectator or a participant.
