An honorary order bearer of the 2nd degree medal "For Merit to the Fatherland", a professional hockey player of the Soviet Union, and later the holder of the title of Honored Coach of the Russian Federation, Sergei Mikhailovich Mikhalev was born in the Chelyabinsk region, in the village of Shershni, in 1947. The 19-year-old's hockey sports career began in Chelyabinsk at the Petrel hockey club in 1966.
In the legendary club, Ufa "Salavat Yulaev", the hockey player began to play in 1970 and stayed in it until 1977, and in the interval 1974-1975. managed to play in the Kuibyshev SKA. After playing in Ufa for 2 years, Mikhalev received the Shakhtar Cup.

After completing his playing hockey career, the athlete continued to work with the Ufa club as a mentor, replacing Viktor Sadomov. Together with the club work, Sergei Mikhalev led the hockey team of students of the Soviet Union, which in 1989 won a silver medal at the Universiade games.
In 1990, Mikhail Mikhailovich received a proposal from Gennady Tsygurov, the main mentor of the Togliatti Lada, to work as an assistant coach. Here, a former athlete spends 9 years, and as it turned out, not in vain. In 1996-97 Tolyatti “Lada” took the silver of the Russian hockey championship, and in 1997 became the European champion. In addition, she was a champion (in 1993-94, 1995-96) and a prize-winner (in 1992-93, 1994-95) of the MHL.
The position of the main mentor of the Cherepovets Severstal Mikhalev received in 1999. Six years of work with the club yielded the following results: in 2000-2001. - 3rd place of the Russian Championship, 2002-2003. - 2nd place.
