In 2014, the fantastic movie “Edge of the Future” was released for rent. This spectacle compares favorably with numerous films about aliens, which in recent years have literally filled the screens. In addition to an interesting plot, good-quality special effects and excellent musical accompaniment, actors distinguished the film “Edge of the Future” from other projects of this kind. Indeed, it was through the efforts of Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and others that this fantastic action movie received so high marks from film critics and viewers.
Painting “The Edge of the Future” (2014)
The script of the film was written based on the popular in 2004-2005. Ranobe (Japanese graphic novel) All You Need Is Kill.
At first, Billy Cage was supposed to play Brad Pitt, but because of employment in other projects, he refused, and the role went to the main Scientologist of Hollywood - Tom Cruise. And his fighting girlfriend played in the film "Edge of the Future" Emily Blunt.
The director's chair of the project was occupied by Doug Lyman, who became famous thanks to films about Jason Bourne.
This film was successful at the box office, raising $ 370 million.
In parallel with the release of the film “Edge of the Future” (2014), a manga adaptation of the novel All You Need Is Kill was published in the United States, and a music disc with soundtrack recordings for the picture was also released.
Plot
In the near future, the Earth is attacked by a race of alien creatures, nicknamed earthlings "facial expressions." Most of the weapons of people are powerless in front of them. And although all countries have united before a common danger - this does not help defeat the enemy.
Suddenly, humanity had a hope. The use of exoskeletons in one of the battles made it possible for people to gain a small victory thanks to the courage of Sergeant Rita Vrataska. Encouraged by this achievement, earthlings are preparing for a new offensive and are conducting a large-scale public relations campaign with Rita.
William Cage was the press secretary of the US Army, but when they wanted to send him to fight along with other soldiers, he tried to refuse, for which he was demoted to a private. Once at the front, during the battle he was killed by an unusual facial expression, which, before his death, accidentally doused him with his blood. After a few moments, Cage wakes up when he arrives at the military base. Soon he discovers that, having died, he comes back to life at one and the same moment of the past.
A chance acquaintance with Rita helps William to find out the truth about what is happening. It turns out that the killed alien had the ability to restart time, because of which the facial expressions managed to defeat earthlings. Having bathed in the blood of an alien, Cage also received this gift, like Vrataski once.
Teaming up with Dr. Carter, a specialist in microbiology, Rita and William are trying to find and destroy Omega - the main individual facial expressions that controls all of them. Having survived a lot of adventures, the heroes manage to do this, but they all die.
Before his death, Cage plunges into the blood of the Omega that he killed, which is why he regains consciousness long before the start of the offensive. The hero is surprised to learn that the facial expressions are defeated, and goes to get acquainted with Rita again.
Tom Cruise as Billy Cage
The main character - Major William Cage - was played in the movie "Edge of the Future" Tom Cruise.
This actor has repeatedly "saved the world" from aliens in other films ("War of the Worlds", "Oblivion").
Starting with the role of a graduate of David Shawn’s military school in “The Cadets” (1981), this actor often played the military (“The Best Shooter”, “Born on the Fourth of July”, “The Last Samurai”) or special agents (“Mission Impossible 1-3”, “ Knight of the Day ”,“ Minority Report ”,“ Jack Reacher ”).
Meanwhile, there were romantic characters in his career: Jack from The Legends, Joseph Donelly from Far Far Away, David Ames from Vanilla Sky.
And in some paintings, Tom Cruise deliberately allowed himself to be disfigured for the role: “Born on the Fourth of July”, “Vanilla Sky”, “Soldiers of Failure”.
In "The Edge of the Future," this actor embodied on screen a traditional image of a hero saving a whole world.
Billy Cage performed by Cruise has a rather complicated character. At first, a typical staff worker appears in front of the audience, who is used to making empty fiery speeches about patriotism and hiding behind someone else's backs.
However, the hero gradually changes. One of the main driving forces in this Cage evolution is love for Rita. Thanks to her, William becomes not only a good soldier, but also a real hero. In fact, it tells about the spiritual reincarnation of Billy Cage's film "The Edge of the Future."
Tom Cruise received the highest fee among the actors of the project - 38 million dollars, although for him this is not a lot of money, because in the past he was paid 70-80 million for participating in action films.
Emily Blunt - Rita Vrataski
The lover of the hero of Tom Cruise played the British Emily Blunt.
World fame came to her after participating in the cult film about the fashion "The Devil Wears Prada." After this, the actress often got roles in costume dramas (Young Victoria, The Wolfman).
In order not to become a hostage to one image, she embodied on the screen completely different heroines: the maniac Maru in “Obsession”, the unhappy married teacher of the French Prudy in “Life by Jane Austen”, the dancer Eliza in “Changing Reality”, etc.
The role of Rita Vrataska in the film "The Edge of the Future" became completely unlike all the previous work of the actress. Emily Blunt had never before played a female soldier in action movies.
To match her heroine, the actress had to lose weight and build muscle. Thanks to what the audience did not see Emily’s romantic heroine, whom they were accustomed to, but a tough, cold, self-confident woman who was not in vain called "an all-metal bitch."
Minor Actors of "Edge of the Future": Brendan Gleeson
Among other famous performers of key roles in the picture appears Irishman Brendan Gleeson.
Looking at this actor, it's hard to believe that he is only 7 years older than Tom Cruise. Despite the fact that outwardly the man is not so attractive, in terms of acting, Gleason is two heads taller than the Hollywood handsome. By the way, before participating in the movie "Edge of the Future", the actors Cruz and Gleason already worked together in the project "Mission Impossible-2".
For a long career in cinema, Brendan gained the fame of an actor who plays mostly negative characters. His most famous works are Mission Impossible-2, General, Troy, Braveheart, Kingdom of Heaven, Mysterious Albert Nobbs, Access Code Cape Town, Resident of the Damned and several films about Harry Potter, where he played the fighter Alastor Moody.
In The Edge of the Future, Gleason played General Brigham. His character is a typical military commander, accustomed to sitting in his office, thoughtlessly sending others to death. The actor perfectly managed to cope with this role.
Noah Taylor's participation in the film
What other actors are involved in the movie "Edge of the Future"? In addition to the aforementioned Gleason, other famous personalities worked with Tom Cruise.
Among them is Australian Noah George Taylor: with a Scientologist, they starred together in Vanilla Sky.
Unlike the artists listed above, Noah does not have a specific image. In other words, being a universal actor, he plays very different roles, and a certain character was not fixed to him.
So, in “Vanilla Sky”, he played the role of a support service specialist Edwin Venturu, in the “Intimate Dictionary” - the unlucky and cruel soldier Neville Schipperly, in a dilogue about Lady Croft - a hacker and friend of Lara Bryce, and in the now popular television series “Game of Thrones” - the vile mercenary Lok.
In “The Edge of the Future,” Noah Taylor played Dr. Carter, who understood the physiology of facial expressions and figured out how to defeat them, only the official military considered his discovery to be crazy.
Other project actors
In addition to the above, many other great artists played in The Edge of the Future.
Among them are American Bill Paxton (“Aliens”, “True Lies”, “Titanic”, “Stringer”), British Charlotte Riley (“Easy Behavior”, “Sharp Visors”) and the performer of the role of Irene Adler in “Sherlock” - Lara Pulve .
"The Edge of the Future" does not have a particularly original plot, because films about the fight against aliens now appear like mushrooms after rain. However, the excellent directorial work of Doug Lyman on the film "The Edge of the Future", the actors of the project, who played their characters perfectly, made this film one of the best in its category.
