The penal system of Russia (hereinafter - the UIS) is a punitive civil service that executes the sentences imposed by the court. A distinctive feature of this structure is that it limits the rights of the most dangerous citizens not only of our state, but also of foreign countries. Since the prison theme is very interesting, and due to the widespread distribution of jargon, tattoos and customs among young people, many are interested in: how many prisoners are there in Russia now? The question is simple, but extremely interesting.
Current state of affairs
“The level of contingent in places of deprivation of liberty is declining,” official statistics say. The number of prisoners in Russia as of September 1, 2018 amounted to 582,889 people. It is worth noting that this indicator decreased by 19,000 compared to the first day of 2018.
About places of punishment
Since the term “prisoner” refers exclusively to persons serving a sentence of imprisonment, it is worth paying attention to the number of correctional institutions.
At the moment, the state has 708 colonies. This type of government institutions also includes places of punishment for women, as well as the “zones” of general and strict regimes. At the present stage of development, Russia in many areas is trying to imitate European states, which, in turn, are promoting these or those short stories around the world. The penitentiary system was no exception.

The peculiarity of foreign prisons is to punish. And if in Russia such is the correction and prevention of new dangerous acts, then in Europe and the USA criminals are placed in prisons in order to isolate themselves from respectable citizens. That is why in Europe it is considered inhumane to restrict even a criminal in the conditions of residence.
A vivid example is Norway, which is known for its "resort" places of detention. There is a gym, a supermarket for those serving their sentences, soft beds, a TV, a library, showers, designed in accordance with European standards. In general, prisoners who have committed serious deeds have much better living conditions than some citizens of our state.
Despite the many distinctive features of the Russian mentality from the morals of Europeans and Americans, the prison system loses its distinctive features: the number of prisoners in Russia decreases every year. The number of prisoners in Russia by years: merciless statistics
Since the beginning of 2010, Russia has actively begun to adopt European reforms. At that time, more than 821,000 convicts were held in places of detention. The most numerous category were prisoners aged 25 to 55 years - 510,007 people. At the same time, in 2017 this indicator decreased to 400 566 people.
Despite a significant decrease in middle-aged convicts, the number of persons significantly increased in places of deprivation of liberty, whose age has exceeded the mark of “60 years”. So, in 2010, 6,722 pensioners were kept in institutions, and in 2018 - 8,814.
Very interesting is the statistics of convicts depending on the term of imprisonment. So, from 5 to 10 years, 172,000 prisoners are to be imprisoned. It would seem that the most dangerous and serious crimes, for which more than 15 years of punishment is awarded, occur less frequently. However, nearly 30,000 people have been sentenced to 15 or more years in prison. At the same time, only 17,000 people have to endure for less than 12 months.
About committed acts
The number of prisoners in Russia is of particular interest when considering the qualitative indicator of crimes committed. So, in 2017, 123,000 people were convicted of murder. It should be noted that the indicator has remained stable for 11 years: in 2006 under Art. 105 of the Criminal Code convicted 121,000 people.
The number of men and women prisoners in Russia varies significantly among themselves, but internally remains unstable. So, for inflicting grievous bodily harm, 6,000 women were convicted in 2006 and 3,000 in 2017. Despite this, statistics on the number of domestic murders has not lost ground over the years.
The female crime rate in Russia is generally declining, but this does not apply to drug crimes with which the state is actively fighting. Moreover, in judicial practice, cases of women taking guilt for their husbands and children are not uncommon. That is why crime indicators can in some way be formal in nature, however, these numbers help to understand: indeed, measures taken by the state to combat crime are effective.
