According to statistics, it is acute or chronic inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsils (tonsillitis) that causes the development of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the heart, joints, kidneys, and nervous system. Therefore, doctors of any specialty say that it is almost impossible to cure a patient with diseases of internal organs without sanitizing the focus of infection in the body. In some cases, the patient is diagnosed with asymptomatic chronic tonsillitis, the treatment of which should be carried out persistently and consistently at home, in strict accordance with the doctor's recommendations.
Chronic tonsillitis - how to draw up a treatment program
Very often, if there is a sore throat, fever, general malaise, the patient takes some medications on his own and does not suspect that the acute infection asymptomatically turned into chronic tonsillitis. Treatment at home with an unreasonably short course of taking antibiotics, non-compliance with bed rest, early termination of therapy generally leads to the fact that the causative agent of the disease, hemolytic streptococcus, becomes resistant to antibacterial agents, which causes complications. Prescribing antibiotics without taking into account the sensitivity of microorganisms and the condition of the patient's body leads to the fact that complications from the internal organs develop already at the first exacerbation of the focus of a chronic infection.
Often, treatment of tonsillitis at home is generally limited to only a single dose of antipyretic drugs, and a day after normalization of body temperature, without even waiting for a full recovery, a person returns to the team and becomes the focus of infection. In fact, this disease belongs to those rare types of pathological processes in the body that cannot be cured without a reasonable combination of local procedures and systemic therapy, including the rational prescription of antibiotics.
However, only a doctor after a personal examination of the patient can diagnose chronic tonsillitis. Treatment at home, regardless of the severity of the patient’s condition, should include the immediate appointment of bed rest, a rational change in diet (the use of a diet with mechanical and chemical preservation of the pharyngeal tonsils), and the appointment of local and systemic drug therapy.
Antibiotics - an indispensable component of the treatment regimen
When prescribing treatment, the doctor must take into account that the weakening of the body's immune system becomes the cause of the exacerbation of the focus of infection. Therefore, chronic tonsillitis, the treatment of which is successful at home in compliance with medical prescriptions in 90% of patients, involves the appointment of antibacterial drugs, preferably after determining the sensitivity of the pharynx microflora to them, as well as agents that stimulate the activity of the immune system.
In the overwhelming majority of cases, antibiotics are prescribed in a rather long course and continue taking drugs even after a visible improvement in the patient’s condition, and only the doctor can decide how to administer the drug, inside or in the form of injections. In addition, in cases where the patient is diagnosed with chronic tonsillitis, treatment at home necessarily involves the local use of antimicrobial agents. The use of rinses with solutions of antiseptics, the use of aerosols with antimicrobial and analgesic effects, lubrication of inflamed tonsils with Lugol's solution, iodinol, chlorhexidine are shown.
In each specific case of chronic tonsillitis, the doctor selects an individual program for the treatment of exacerbations and rehabilitation of the focus of infection, including, if indicated, recommends surgical treatment.
