After the project about the Avengers was released on the big screens in the spring of 2018, fans of popular heroes with special zeal began to discuss the meaning of Infinity stones in the Marvel cinema universe. What is known about these unusual objects? Where did they come from, why did they play a key role in the film adaptation of the famous comics. And why is the Time Stone considered an important link not only in Doctor Strange, but also in other Marvel paintings?
The value of stones
In the Marvel paintings, viewers saw six stones (in graphic novels there are 7) created by various cosmic entities. All these objects have unique capabilities that have been amplified for a long time and slightly modified by different alien worlds. In the films Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The First Avenger, and others, more than once there were references to these powerful artifacts, but their meaning and history were not fully explained.
And yet, over time, it became apparent that all significant events lead to a powerful cosmic supervillain who intends to get all the stones of Infinity and conquer the world.
History and names of stones
In the comics with stones, many incidents happened: they tried to destroy them, they disappeared into a black hole, switched from character to character and even changed their color. About their origin it is known that they arose after the Big Bang, which formed the entire universe. At first, the stone was the only one, but later it fell apart into several multi-colored fragments, each of which gained its own strength and features.
Many villains tried to combine objects again, and the Thanos Infinity Glove became the most effective way. So, for centuries, a struggle has been waged for the stones of Time, Space, Reality, Force, Reason and Soul. Printed comics also have an ego stone.
Stone vault
Viewers noticed Infinity stones in films, not only in the glove of Thanos, but also in certain vaults. For example, the stone of Space was enclosed in a four-dimensional Tesseract hypercube. The Force Stone was in a sphere stolen in Guardians of the Galaxy by Peter Quill. Subsequently, he transferred his find to Corpus Nova.
In the film “Doctor Strange,” viewers first saw the stone of Time. The magician, performed by Benedict Cumberbatch, became the keeper of this object, which, in turn, was enclosed in a kind of pendant called the Eye of Agamotto. The ether, which became known in the second part of the Thor, also turned out to be one of the objects of Thanos hunting. At the end of the film, this stone of Reality, capable of taking on a solid form, was entrusted to the Collector.
In the film "Avengers: Age of Ultron" it turned out that the Scepter is the repository of the stone of the Mind, but subsequently this function went to Vision, in whose forehead the artifact was before meeting with Thanos. For a long time, the Infinity stones in the Marvel cinematic universe caused controversy among its fans - most of them could not come to a consensus about where the Soul stone is stored. In the project "Avengers: Infinity War" it became known that this subject of controversy was under the protection of the Red Skull on the distant planet Vormir-6.
Stone of Space
For a long time he was imprisoned in the blue Tesseract hypercube, reflecting his power. Can control and distort space, move to anywhere in the universe. It was from this stone that the audience began to get acquainted with other stones - for the first time he appeared in The First Avenger. At first, Hydra owned the artifact, obeying the Red Skull, but thanks to Captain America, the object fell into the waters of the Arctic Ocean. After some time, he was discovered by Howard Stark and handed over to the Shield. Tesseract became interested in Loki, and he even managed to take possession of him for some period. Subsequently, thanks to Thor, the hypercube fell into Asgard's vault.
When the brothers hurriedly left the planet after the battle with Hela, Loki took a stone with him, but he could not hide it from the gaze of Thanos.
Power Stone
It was first shown in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Guardians of the Galaxy project. All the key characters of the film hunted for the mysterious sphere, and it turned out that it is a repository for the stone of the Force. The villain Ronan the Prosecutor intended with his help to destroy the planet Xander, but in the end he himself was killed by him, and the stone returned to the previous container. In general, it is a source of all existing energy and strength, but it shows the greatest efficiency in a company with other similar objects, the capabilities of which it also enhances. The Avengers decided to hide the stone from Thanos on Xander, but the space supervillain managed to get it.
Reality Stone
This is a red liquid ether, which eventually hardened to form a stone of Reality. In graphic novels, this object could embody any wishes, even if they violate the laws of nature. It requires careful handling in order to avoid catastrophic consequences, because touching the border of reality, it can lead to serious disaster. For the first time, viewers saw an artifact in the movie “Thor 2: The Kingdom of Darkness”. Subsequently, it was transferred to the Collector for storage, but he could not avoid a confrontation with Thanos.
Mind Stone
Viewers familiar with the plot of the first part of the Avengers: Infinity War project already know how important the Infinity stones are to Thanos. With their help, he longed for a perfect balance in the world, and for this he was ready to make serious sacrifices for himself. Prior to the events of the film Avengers: Age of Ultron, the artifact was in the scepter of Loki, who successfully controlled the consciousness of people with his help. The object was stolen by Hydra, but the organization did not own it for long - as a result, it ended up in the hands of Ultron, creating for his own purposes an ideal body and mind. The creation of the villain was to combine the qualities of vibranium metal and living matter.
The intervention of a team of superheroes violated Ultron's plans, and Vision appeared in the ranks of the Avengers, who became the keeper of the stone of the Mind.
Soul Stone
It is considered the most powerful stone of all others. Only in the film "Avengers: Infinity War" it became clear exactly where he is, and before that fans could only guess his location. The appearance of the artifact was expected by fans of the film adaptation from the days of the premiere of the first “Avengers”, and when it was nevertheless shown in the frame, this event fully paid off. It turned out that with its help you can somehow change the souls of not only the living, but also the dead. Also, the stone helps to penetrate into a special mini-universe. Initially, it was this object that possessed the power of all its “brothers” and its own mind. When the Avengers began to actively confront the supervillain, it became known that only Gamora, the denied adopted daughter of Thanos, knows where the Soul Stone is located.
Subsequently, the Red Skull reported that the artifact can only be obtained after a certain personal sacrifice.
Stone of Time
This artifact is one of the most remarkable in the glove of Thanos, and many movie fans suggest that it will play a key role in the 2019 Avengers. As already mentioned, his storehouse for a long period was the Eye of Agamotto. For the first time about this creation of the Big Bang was told in the film "Doctor Strange."
The artifact was on the pedestal in Kamar Taj for many years, after which it played an important role in the formation of the hero of Cumberbatch, who also protected him before the collision with Thanos. According to the plot of the film “Doctor Strange”, the stone of Time is able to change the course of time, turn things and people into their past state, create a temporary loop. Also with its help you can see thousands of probabilities of the development of events. In the comics, it is noted that the Eye of Agamotto has a force similar to stone. It is not known whether this information will somehow appear in the second part of the Avengers: Infinity War project.
In a series that was released in the spring of 2018, Stephen Strange arbitrarily gave the stone of Time to Thanos, before which he “looked” into the future, and determined that such a turn of events was the only way to defeat the enemy afterwards. How this will be put into practice will be known from the 2019 film.
