The story of the Oceanic airline flying along the Sydney-Los Angeles route has been exciting the imagination of millions of viewers all over the world for several years. Few people have heard of the TV series Lost or Missing, as movie pirates translated it. Human behavior in an extreme situation, the preparation of various life stories and the mystery of the island - these are the things that kept you from tearing off the screen for 6 seasons. Reviews of the film "Lost" are mostly positive and even enthusiastic. But the debate about the interpretation of the ending is still ongoing.
Title
The original name of the series is Lost, which literally translates as "Lost." In the Russian box office, it is known to everyone as "Lost", which has nothing to do with the literal translation. But for those who are familiar with the plot, it is clear that this name still perfectly reflects the essence of the film.

The first channel in Russia was shown by the Channel One television company, and by its own efforts it was translated into Russian. It was the producers of this channel that decided that for the Russian viewer the name "Lost" sounds more harmonious and positive. The missing have a hope to stay alive, the only question is who it will be. And also the producers were led by commercial interest. Shortly before the start of the show in Russia, Channel One hosted the reality show The Last Hero, which was quite successful. The soundtrack to it was the song of the group "Bi-2" "Lost." Thus, an association was established between the series and the show to fuel interest in the series unfamiliar to the Russian audience.
Due to the inaccuracy of the translation, there is a little confusion. Some people confuse the 2006 film Stay Alive or in Russian "Lost" with the series. Reviews about the film, I must say, are not very positive.
History of creation
For the first time, the idea to create a series about a plane crash on a desert island came to the head of ABC television channel Lloyd Brown in late 2005 - early 2006. His channel was going through difficult times, the best of what he was showing at that time was the show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”. Brown needed a fresh idea for a new series or show. Inspired by the film "Outcast" Zemeckis, he initially wanted to create a series about human drama without any elements of the supernatural and leaps in time.
When he voiced the idea, he was not particularly supported on the channel. Only Tom Sherman thought it was promising, so he shared it with a friend of the director and screenwriter Jeffrey Lieber, and he, in turn, revised Brown's idea: changed his name, incredibly quickly “provided” the survivors with food and housing, introduced leaps in time. Brown did not like all this, and he turned to another screenwriter - Jeffrey Jacob Abrams. After reading the script, Abrams said he was getting down to work, but made a condition - the main role in the film should not be played by people, but by the island itself. Even then, Abrams came up with a bunker. Thinking, Brown agreed, but set his own condition - not to go into the fantasy genre, everything should be explained to the maximum by the current laws of physics.
Further, due to the scale of the work, an unknown but talented screenwriter Damon Lindelof was involved. It was he who drew attention to the fact that the heroes should have the motivation to stay on the island. It is impossible for a long time to interfere with those who are thirsty to return home, it will look pretend. So, the series appeared three authors who worked harmoniously on it throughout all seasons. But the failed screenwriter Jeffrey Liberapo, according to rumors, considers himself involved in the creation of the series and even achieved some deductions from all income from it.
The riddle of the island
From the very first episodes, the viewer understands that something is wrong with the island. The place where the missing went is fundamentally different from all places on Earth. The first chill runs when the heroes connect to a certain radio tower and realize that they hear a message about the disaster in French, which has been playing for 16 years. This means the following:
- there were or still are people on the island besides them;
- something feeds this radio tower;
- for 16 years no ship or plane has come to the aid of this woman.
Being longer on the island, they are faced with new and new oddities:
- Polar bear on a tropical island.
- The mysterious "smoke" that kills.
- A plane full of drugs on a tree.
- A huge stone leg, which is part of a colossal statue.
- The ship of slave owners of the XIX century "Black Rock", which is located in the middle of the island, far from the water line.
- No children are born on the island.
- A bunker in which you need to press a specific set of numbers every 90 minutes.
- The empty stations of the mysteriously disappeared Dharma Initiative.
This, of course, is far from all the oddities, but, according to reviews on Staying Alive, the most memorable.
Pros and cons of the plot
Those who watched the series note the following advantages in it:
- A huge number of storylines, each of which is complete and complete.
- Unpredictability and unbanality. Each new round in the plot was like a bolt from the blue.
- Unusual reception of inserts from the past and the future. You do not immediately understand when the actions of a particular series took place.
- The characters are not "cardboard", but very deep and real. You can perfectly see the personal growth of many of them.
- Observation of people caught together in an extreme situation and relatively confined space. This is a great way to pay attention to how different under different conditions different personalities are revealed.
- Acting. Each coped with its five-plus role, but Sawyer and John Locke are especially noted.
- Musical accompaniment.
The minuses of the series "Lost" in the reviews note the following:
- The plot began to be delayed from season 2 and untwisted artificially for commercial purposes.
- The ending was not to everyone's taste, many did not understand it, someone called frank delirium.
As you can see, there are many more advantages, but the cons are quite significant. However, the first 2 seasons are praised almost without exception, and, having looked at the full 2 seasons, it’s just hard to come off.
Love triangle
The main female role in the series is the role of Kate. She was performed by Evangeline Lilly. Once on the island, the girl immediately becomes attractive to two handsome men - Sawyer and Jack.
Sawyer is a classic handsome, dangerous and charming. And Jack is nobility itself, a reliable shoulder. Kate rushes between the two of the entire series. But in the end you can understand that more of her soul lies with Sawyer, only now they are completely not made for each other, because they are too similar.
This love triangle excited the audience and critics so much that they are still arguing about who Kate would be better with and what she needed to do.
Later, Juliet, who was the female counterpart of Jack, joined the triangle. Sawyer fell in love with her and lived with her for 3 years until she died.
John Locke
The character of John Locke aroused interest from the first series. The attentive viewer noticed that he was in completely worn boots when the crash, but despite this, got up. Moreover, it is adapted to island life more than any of the passengers. He impresses everyone else with his knowledge and endurance. But at the same time, it causes a strange feeling: looking into his eyes, you understand that something is wrong with him, like with the island. Further, John Locke begins to more and more identify with the island, experiencing a painful affection for him.
Spectators from the very beginning associated the oddities of the island with him. Some people were annoyed by their stubbornness, sometimes even stupid. But here everyone notes the magnificent game of the actor, not already imagining the series without this character.
The ending of the series
At the beginning of season 6, reality is divided into two: the one in which flight 815 crashed, and the one where he avoided it. Viewers simultaneously observe how the fate of the heroes would have developed if they had flown to Los Angeles. But gradually, Desmond begins to collect them together, to remind them of the plane and that they should return. And at the end, they all gather in the church, and then "leave."
A few episodes to the end finally tell the story of Jacob and his brother. As it turned out, Jacob is the keeper of the island, and his brother is the “smoke”. They were born from a woman who was in a shipwreck and found salvation on the island. The brothers were raised by an inhabitant of the island who killed their mother in order to impersonate her. Richard arrived at the Black Rock in the 19th century, and Jacob appointed him island keeper in exchange for immortality.
In basic reality, some Dharma Initiative employees and crash participants have teamed up into a small group that falls into a temporary loop. The man in Black is trying to return to the island those who left him: Jack, Kate and Hurley. It turns out that they gathered them all on the island, because they are candidates for the post of Jacob. As a result, Juliet and Said die. It all ends with Desmond entering the cave to light the “light”, Jack dies in a fight with the false John Locke, and Claire, Miles, Lapidus, Richard, Sawyer and Kate sail home. Kate said goodbye to Jack with tears, but still flew away with Sawyer. In the final scene, viewers see how Jack dies in the bushes with Walt's dog, and Hurley remains the keeper of the island.
As the audience understood the ending
After the series ended, the audience had a lot of questions, as many did not understand the ending. And those who understood, “decoded” it in different ways. Reviews about the ending "Lost" were divided. Someone considered her complete nonsense, and someone - full of philosophy.
Most understood that alternative reality was purgatory. Others decided that they all died during the crash, and the island itself was a purgatory. But the theme of purgatory slips in almost all the reviews about "Lost."
But then the question: “Why for these people is such a purgatory than they stood out?” He often comes to mind when thinking about the meaning of the ending. What were the passengers of flight 815 all the same?
There are alternative reviews for the Lost / Lost series. They are from those who know firsthand the theory of time. It states that time is a physical entity that can change under the influence of various factors, such as speed, magnetic radiation and the surrounding space.
Trace in the hearts of Russian viewers
The series was a resounding success in Russia. He is still remembered. After him, people realized that TV shows can be as high-quality and deep as films. Based on his motives, practically in every major city of Russia, the quests “Lost” were realized. Reviews are always positive, since you can endlessly draw ideas from this series. Most often, the topic of the bunker is used, from which you need to get out, and the time of the crash of the plane, when you need to get rid of belts and go into the unknown.
