Films about the war occupy a special niche in Russian cinema. And this is more than understandable: we still remember the stories of relatives about the horrors of the Great Patriotic War and are grateful to them for their feat and courage. By revising old films, one involuntarily becomes involved in the events taking place. Yes, there are no computer special effects with which modern films abound, but there is real sincerity, which you unconditionally believe.
The plot is often not original, but you pay little attention to it. In films of this kind, another thing is important: the lack of falsity, vulgarity and replay. They talk not only about events, but also about people who perform a feat, sacrificing themselves so that others can live.
The list of Russian war films is huge. And of the really good, itâs very difficult to choose the best, because everyone has their own vision of the world. But there are tapes that are required to view.
Classic Soviet Cinema
Below are the most interesting Russian war films. The list, unfortunately, is far from complete, but all the paintings are deservedly considered classics of the genre and occupy first places in the ratings of moviegoers. However, if you rank the best of the best, you get something like this: the first place was divided by the pictures âHot Snowâ and âThey Fought for the Motherlandâ, the second - âIn the war as in the warâ, âAty-bats, soldiers went,â and the honorable third place went to "Heavenly Slow-moving" and "Some old people go into battle."
"Heavenly slow-moving"
If you want to watch good war films (Russian), the list must include this comedy. Among Soviet films about the Great Patriotic War, there are quite a few light films, and they are lost against the background of cult ones. Now, few will remember such a comedy as âHeavenly Slow-movingâ. The film was shot in the best traditions of the time, it is sincere and real.
When the war began, and three friends went to the front, they promised each other that before the victory, not one of them would fall in love. The promise was strictly observed until Vasily Bulochkin was injured in the hospital. The hero will now have to forget about high-speed airplanes, however, good specialists are always needed, and Vasily is appointed commander of the female squadron U-2. Even being in the flower garden, Bulochkin steadfastly holds the defense and does not fall in love with any of his subordinates. Until a journalist who is well versed in airplanes arrives at their unit.
âOnly old people go into battleâ
Almost every spring they show classic films on military subjects (Russian). The list will not be complete without Bykov films. âOnly Old Men Go Into Battleâ is a famous film familiar to many from childhood. His characters are already like relatives, and most replicas can be repeated by heart, but the charm of the next viewing from this is not lost at all. This is the same classic for centuries.
Many pilots dream to get to Captain Titarenko, but itâs not so simple: the captain not only takes skill in the squadron, but also looks at the presence of musical talent. The main characters were lucky: they both know how to sing and play musical instruments, so they hit the coveted part. That's just to fight them, despite all the merits, they refuse to take it - beginners. But this is only for the time being. Very soon, "newcomers" will show themselves not only on the stage, but also in the sky.
âAta-bats, soldiers were coming ...â
Two storylines intertwine in the film: 1974 and 1944. Relatives of those killed in battle come to pay a debt of memory to their loved ones. And flashbacks show the events of the distant 44th, when 18 guys died on the same day, but did not give the enemy a high-rise and a field, selflessly fighting against tanks.
Blood and flowers intertwine in the snow, sweat and tears of the mourners. All this makes the film piercingly bright and real. It is very difficult to hold back tears, watching as people die, one after another, who did not spare their lives for the Motherland.
âIn war as in warâ
If you are interested in old-style military films (Russian), the list must include this film. "In war as in war" is rarely shown, possibly due to the lack of vivid battle scenes, pathos and heroic deeds.
In the center of the plot, the crew of self-propelled guns, his everyday life and the battle for the village of Sokolovka. Although the viewer lives only a few days with the characters, the impressions after watching remain strong.
The young lieutenant Maleshkin was appointed commander of the experimental crew of the self-propelled gun SU-100. The college graduate, who has not yet seen a real battle, is received by the older comrades with hostility. Not only is Maleshkin not respected by his team, he also managed to get blacklisted by the battery commander, and there are always some troubles on the crew.
Perhaps Maleshkina would have been removed from his post, but the SU-100 crew was at the forefront and entered into an unequal battle. In extreme conditions, the nonsense commander shows himself to be a completely different person.
âThey fought for their homelandâ
The legendary Soviet film by Sergei Bondarchuk is considered number 1 among films about the war. These are unforgettable battle scenes shot without any computer graphics, an indescribable game of actors who, it seems, do not play a role, but live in a tape. Now military films (Russian), the list of which is also large, do not even closely convey the atmosphere inherent in this masterpiece.
The main character is a simple man who went to the front, because it is his duty as a person. But Streltsov used to bring the matter to an end. Therefore, having been injured in one of the battles, he, still shell-shocked, returns to his regiment. Because he knows that people are sorely lacking and every rifle counts. He returns, knowing that he is unlikely to return alive.
"Hot Snow"
This is not the most popular and famous film about the war. It does not have a galaxy of cinema stars and touching scenes, but the greatness of the people and the desire for victory are shown. Russian war films (the list goes on and on) did not seek to enter the TOP popularity, they showed something else: unity, faith in the best, hope and perseverance.
Why is snow hot? From the blood, from the shed blood of Russian soldiers fighting for their homeland. The picture shows one of the episodes of the battle in the Kotelnikov operation near Stalingrad.
A huge group of German troops was taken into the ring, and for its liberation the command of the German army sends help - the best attack divisions. Soviet troops were ordered to stop the upcoming attack at all costs.
The soldiers of the battery of Lieutenant Drozdovsky arrived in the division of Colonel Deyev for fire support. But instead of direct fire they had to take an unequal battle with tanks breaking through the defensive lines. The shells are rapidly melting, people are dying, but you cannot retreat, even realizing that only death is ahead.
Only seven people survived after the battle.
Modern
Russian contemporary war films (list below) are often blamed for the implausibility of the plot, the poor play of the actors, the neglect of the theme of patriotism and the desire to put everything in a new light. However, there are paintings in the atmosphere close to the Soviet school, sincere, honest, instructive, without fountains of blood and torn limbs in the foreground.
"We are from the future"
Opinions about the film are directly opposite among the audience: some consider it a âdummyâ, unworthy of attention, with many blunders and a delusional plot, others consider it a breakthrough in Russian cinema, a worthy successor to the traditions of old Soviet military paintings, telling modern youth about the war in an accessible way.
Young people come together in one team to get money. They chose a successful and, according to preliminary data, âfishâ place for their research: in the past, serious military battles took place here. And this implies a large number of finds that can be easily sold.
The team, to put it mildly, is motley: skinhead, gamer, rapper and smart guy. They do not get along very well, but they have to endure, because money is very necessary. Once, having gone to swim in the lake, the four ended up in the historical past, in 1942, in the midst of hostilities. How to go back is not clear, so you have to act on the circumstances.
"Brest Fortress"
1941, the very beginning of the war. The first blow, as everyone knows, fell on the Brest Fortress. But unlike other films, here the events are shown through the eyes of a child who managed to stay alive.
Sasha Akimovâs world was calm and almost perfect: everyday chores, beloved girl, rehearsals in the orchestra. All this collapses overnight, and real hell begins. And Sasha becomes a link between the three groups of soldiers trying to keep the fortress.

Russian films about the military, the list of which is replenished from year to year, as a rule, are not encouraging. But, according to most viewers, âBrest Fortressâ exceeded all expectations. There are no mountains of corpses in the film that are so fond of showing in modern cinema - the most terrible moments are not shown to the viewer, although they are mentioned. Musical accompaniment and special effects on top. Straightforwardness and vitality, the absence of unnecessary pathos make the film more than worthy and compulsory for viewing.
"Spring Call"
Spring military recruits films (Russian), the list of which is given in the article, as a rule, is seen. Therefore, they will be interested to see not about the fighting, but about the life of the same recruits as they are.
"Spring Call" - a film showing not military operations, but the usual everyday life of soldiers. Sergeant Karpenko receives a squad of recruits who least of all want to obey orders. Private Polukhin stands out especially. In the face of the sergeant, he sees his enemy, whom he considers necessary to repulse. And the heroes have a lot to go through before they finally see each other in the true light.
TV series
In addition to full-length films about the war, they shot and continue to shoot mini-series. The leading positions in the rating of viewers are occupied by Soviet paintings, from the contemporary to the third line of the chart came the series âShtrafbatâ.
âBattalions ask for fireâ
Perhaps one of the most memorable and reliable series about the Great Patriotic War. It realistically shows the everyday life of the fighters: dirt, sweat, lack of sleep, hunger. However, they are struggling to comply with the order "Do not retreat!".
Two battalions were to create a bridgehead for the subsequent offensive and divert the attention of the enemy. They were promised fire support, but the command plans at the last moment changed, and people continued to fight, being surrounded, but not losing hope for help.
The film is heavy, the atmosphere is oppressive, but you need to watch at least to know at what price the victory was.
âCalling fire on ourselvesâ
Noteworthy are many Russian war films (TV series). The list goes on with a tape based on real events: Seshcha airfield was destroyed by Russian aviation in 1943.
Anyone Morozova, upon returning home, finds out that none of her relatives were left alive: everyone died during the bombing. But instead of despairing and non-stop tears, the girl decides to fight. Anya organizes an underground resistance group. One of the tasks of the group is the search for a German airfield. The girls manage to establish contact with the Poles working at the plant and collect important information. However, in order for Soviet aircraft to strike, the group will have to divert the attention of the enemy at the cost of their own lives.
"Shtrafbat"
Often viewers are looking for what to see, paying attention to the best films (list), rating. Russian military, crime are also welcome. There is a series that combines a fairly high rating and an interesting plot.
Having been behind the front line automatically becomes a traitor to the homeland. For them, only one fate is destined - the execution.
Major Vasily Tverdokhlebov, who miraculously survived after being shot in captivity, got out of the mass grave and managed to return to his own, was recognized as an enemy of the people. Nobody is going to believe his words. But instead of being shot, Tverdokhlebov is offered to atone for guilt and go to the front line in the penalty battalion. He becomes the commander of a battalion, which is difficult to keep subordinate. However, they have nowhere to run: Germans in front, their machine guns behind.
War films (Russian), the list of which is given in the article, are the most famous, cult. There are many more worthy films, not inferior to them in rating and popularity.
