We invite you to get acquainted with a cozy resort town, the northernmost point of Denmark. In addition to the fact that Skagen is a city of amazing picturesque nature, here you can witness a unique natural phenomenon. It borders the North and Baltic Sea. The border is visible to the naked eye. This is truly an amazing sight!
Skagen - a small cozy Danish town
The sparsely populated town is located on a cape called Grenin, it divides the Kattegat and Skagerrak straits. The first separates Denmark from Sweden, and the second from Norway.
The warm course of the Gulf Stream is washed by Cape Grenen, and therefore there are most sunny days in the year. Thanks to this, Skagen has become one of the most attractive Danish resorts. Here are the summer cottages of the business elite of the entire Scandinavian Peninsula.
Town Features
Sand is the main attraction of Skagen, and at the same time its punishment. Sand dunes move all the time, despite the fact that local residents plant them all the time with trees and grass. The sand fight has been going on for over 200 years.
In the mid-19th century, the city was chosen by artists. Some came here for the entire summer season in order to perpetuate nature and the urban life of Skagen settlers in their paintings of amazing beauty. They were afraid that after a while everything would be under tons of sand. A unique piece of land between the two seas was reflected in the works of artists such as Michael and Anna Anker, P. S. Kreyer and others. Since Skagen has always been a fishing city, many paintings depict local fishermen. Now the work is stored in the museum of painting.
At the "end of the world" lived the famous storyteller G. H. Andersen. He said that here anyone can visit incredible inspiration.
One of Skagen's calling cards is the Buried Church. She surrendered to the constant pressure of the elements in the middle of the 18th century, and now the first floor is completely covered with sand. Today, the white walls of the Lutheran church rise beautifully above the sand dunes.
Cape Grenin is a must-see destination for tourists. Here you can see with your own eyes how the Baltic Sea and the North Sea are connected. This place is considered by residents as the main attraction of the city.
Unique landscape
Only here, a few kilometers from the town of Skagen, if you walk along the coast to Cape Grenen, one hand can be lowered into the Baltic Sea, and the North Sea will splash under the other. The merger of the two seas creates the effect of a certain mystery, mysticism. Locals even call this place the "end of the world." Despite the fact that the temptation to swim in two seas at once is extremely high, swimming is strictly prohibited - the current is too strong, it can be life threatening.
Nature of the phenomenon
The Baltic Sea and the North Sea do not mix at the point of contact, since water currents have different densities. The area of โโtheir contact is relatively small. The reason is that the place where the Baltic Sea and the North Sea meet is shallow.
Due to the fact that numerous freshwater rivers flow into the Baltic Sea, the salinity level of its waters is quite low. Most of the waters of this sea do not flow outside the Baltic basin. There is only a small passage to the North Sea. And the Baltic Sea would be a huge freshwater lake, if not for it.
