Polenova Research Institute - one of the leading neurosurgery clinics in Russia. It was in St. Petersburg, for the first time in the world, that a medical institution was established that deals with brain problems and operations related to interference with the human nervous system. Outstanding Russian scientists stood at the origins - Bekhterev, Molotov, Fedorov.
Description
Leningrad Research Institute of Polenov was created in 1926. It was the world's first medical center specializing in neurosurgery. The idea of establishing the clinic belongs to professors A. G. Molotov and S. P. Fedorov. The idea of founding such an institution was hatched by Professor V. M. Bekhterev, who in 1897 opened the first operational "brain surgery." The clinic was originally conceived as a complex of clinical, research and educational departments.
At the present stage, the Polenov Research Institute is the largest medical institution where they provide high-tech neurosurgical care. The Institute is a state structure and is part of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. The clinical base is formed of five departments of clinical surgery, where in a hospital, 205 people receive treatment at the same time.
Science and practice
The staff of the Polenov Research Institute in St. Petersburg consists of professionals, many of whom have doctoral and master's degrees in medicine. The clinical department annually receives about 2 thousand patients, most of the applicants receive neurosurgical care. The outpatient department receives more than 6 thousand visitors during the year.
Scientific work brings not only discoveries, world fame, but also the opportunity to apply knowledge in the practical field of health care. With the participation of the Polenov Research Institute, 11 interregional neurosurgical centers were created, and active scientific, research and publishing activities are ongoing . A dissertation council has been created on the basis of the institute, postgraduate education of specialists in postgraduate and residency programs is being conducted.
Treatment and diagnosis
The Polenov Research Institute of Neurosurgery retained its leading position in the field of neurosurgery. The clinical departments of the Institute, where surgical interventions are performed, are equipped with modern technology, such as operating microscopes, navigation systems, sets of microsurgical instruments and much more. Surgeons conduct operations in close contact with doctors of related specialties - neurologists, ophthalmologists, therapists, etc.
There are five specialized departments at the Polenov Surgery Research Institute, each with its own specialization:
- The first neurosurgical department. The main activity is surgery of the CNS and ANS injuries, treatment of complications and consequences of injuries resulting from functional injuries.
- The second and fourth neurosurgical departments devote their activities to surgical interventions for neoplasms of the spinal cord and brain.
- The third neurosurgical department specializes in surgical operations of the vessels of the brain and spinal cord.
- The fifth neurosurgical department provides assistance in treating the spectrum of childhood diseases (spinal cord and brain neoplasms, cerebral palsy, cerebrovascular pathology, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, maxillofacial surgery, etc.).
- Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation.
- Restorative medicine and physiotherapy rehabilitation methods.
- Republican Epileptological Neurosurgical Center (for children and adults).
- Two laboratories of pathological anatomy.
- Clinical laboratory.
- Department of X-ray diagnostics with angiographic complex.
Clinic rules
The consultative and outpatient department provides consultations and initial visits to patients with neurosurgical diseases. Based on the results of the examinations, a verdict is issued on further treatment in a hospital, neurosurgical operation or the provision of high-tech care. Also, the center provides consultations and examination of patients who had previously been treated at a research institute.
In the outpatient department, specialists are receiving:
- Neuropathologist. Carries out the initial appointment, appoints additional tests and studies, if necessary, to clarify the diagnosis, gives direction to the neurosurgeon.
- A specialized neurosurgeon specializing in this pathology. The specialist’s task is to make a final diagnosis, issue recommendations for further actions - surgery or conservative treatment. The final decision on the provision of neurosurgical care is made by the selection committee.
Commission
To get a complete and effective consultation with a neurosurgeon, you need to have the results of all previous studies, analyzes (MRI, angiogram, tomogram, etc.), the conclusion of doctors of related specialization - an ENT, an ophthalmologist, etc., an extract from an outpatient card.
The neurosurgeon sends his opinion, which should be endorsed by the chief neurosurgeon of the Health Committee of the Government of St. Petersburg, Professor V.P. Bersnev, to the selection committee. In case of a positive decision on the provision of VMP to issue a quota, the patient must contact the organizational and methodological department at 30 Shkapina Street.
