There is no exact data on the origin of the word Taimyr. However, there is an assumption that it went from the ancient Tungus "Tamur". This word means "rich, dear, valuable."
The Taimyr Peninsula is located between the Yenisei and Khatanga bays. On its territory there are many lakes. The largest of them is Lake Taimyr. This body of water is the second largest after Baikal.
Geographical position
Where is Lake Taimyr located? It is located in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, at the southern foot of the Byrranga massif. Is Lake Taimyr draining or draining? From the reservoir flows the river Lower Taimyr. It carries its waters to the Kara Sea, which flows a little west of Cape Chelyuskin. That is why Lake Taimyr is classified as a sewage reservoir. It belongs to the basin of the Arctic Ocean.

This large body of water, with an area of 4.5 thousand square kilometers, is by its location the most northern on the planet. Lake Taimyr on the map can be found far beyond the Arctic Circle. Its most extreme northern point is located near seventy-fifth degrees of northern latitude.
Origin of the lake
The southern coast of the reservoir has low banks. They are composed of loose Quaternary sediments . The nature of the coastal strata, as well as the average depth of only three meters (the maximum is twenty-six), indicates that Lake Taimyr has a glacial origin.
Climatic conditions
The northern part of the reservoir is located in the tundra zone, where permafrost is widespread. Most of the time, the pond is covered in ice. The thickness of the reservoir reaches two meters, and eighty-five percent of the water area freezes to the bottom. The lake is free of ice for less than eighty days a year. However, this period is characterized by hurricane winds and storms. Due to severe erosion, collapses often occur on the northern shores of the reservoir.
In winter, a large amount of rainfall occurs in the lake area. However, the snow cover is not allowed to form winds and flat terrain.
During the summer period, the lake is characterized by a strong rise in water. It occurs in connection with the melting of the ice shell. Volume loss of up to seventy-five percent occurs during the cold seasons. Water level differences on Lake Taimyr can reach seven meters. This contributes to the flat topography of the southern region. The same phenomena occurred during the ice age.
During the year, the average air temperature in the lake area does not rise above minus thirteen degrees. The warmest is July. In this summer month, air temperature rises to twelve degrees Celsius. The territory where the lake is located is characterized by polar summer, as well as polar winter.
The population of the territories adjacent to the lake
Places where the largest northern body of water is located are not inhabited by people. There are no settlements on Lake Taimyr. Previously, a meteorological station was located in this area.
Flora and fauna
Despite the fact that the lake is located in an area with a harsh climate, there are twenty different species of fish in it. Most often, muksun, chir and whitefish are found. There are omul, burbot, grayling and vendace in the pond. Very few Siberian bull-mason.
Geese, swans, ducks live on Lake Taimyr. The falcon-peregrine falcon, the leggy buzzards, lives in those parts. In winter, the birds fly away. They migrate to warmer climes. However, in the summer they will certainly return and reproduce offspring.
An interesting fact is that there is no higher aquatic vegetation on the lake. And this is despite the fact that individuals that belong to the marine and Baikal water complex live there. Arctic fish such as muksun, whitefish, char, etc. are found in the pond.
Higher aquatic flora in the lake is absent. In this regard, the food chain of the fauna is based on phytoplankton.
During the winter season, the amount of oxygen dissolved in water is sharply reduced. This is due to the fact that in summer a large mass of organic substances gets into the reservoir. Their decay makes the deepest basin inaccessible to fish.
Polar winter and polar summer make their adjustments to the animal and plant life of the region. Plants develop faster due to the short warm period. The nesting period is accelerating. Much faster than in other climatic zones, chicks appear. In a short period of the polar summer, all living things strive to go through all the stages of their development.
Animal Research
The fauna, the habitat of which is Lake Taimyr, was studied for adaptation to the waters of Siberian reservoirs, the level of which also changes dramatically throughout the year. The studied representatives of fauna and flora relate mainly to the marine aquatic complex of living organisms. There are some species characteristic of Lake Baikal.
Representatives of marine flora and fauna appeared in the lake due to its communication via the Lower Taimyr River with the sea. The finding of these species is also explained by changes occurring in sea levels during different historical periods.
Representatives of the Baikal ecosystem fell into the lake due to ice ages, when the hydrological regime of the entire region changed and large lakes formed.
