Ultrasound of the stomach and abdominal organs

Ultrasound of the stomach or other organs is a common method for detecting a large number of various diseases. Its main principle of operation is the sending by a special sensor of ultrasonic waves, which are reflected from the necessary organ. After that, the image of a certain section appears on the monitor.

ultrasound of the stomach

As far back as the last decade, ultrasound examination of the intestines and stomach was considered impossible, since the methodology and equipment for their conduct were imperfect. But fortunately, modern equipment copes well with the task and at the highest level.

Ultrasound examination is completely safe for human health and a fairly accurate diagnostic method. Therefore, ultrasound is prescribed for children of all ages and pregnant women.

When symptoms of gastroenterological diseases occur, an ultrasound scan of the stomach is necessary. There are two methods for performing this procedure.

  1. An internal study performed by introducing a special sensor into the stomach. To perform this procedure, eating on the eve of the evening and morning of the day is prohibited.

  2. Transabdominal is a study (ultrasound of the stomach) performed through the skin surface of the abdominal wall. To perform it, it is necessary that the patient's bladder is full. And for this you need to drink at least a liter of water 1-1.5 hours before the procedure.

If there are suspicions of various types of formations (malignant or benign), then ultrasound of the stomach is performed using an internal sensor, since the morphology of the disease with this research method is more clearly expressed.

If necessary, diagnose the remaining internal organs should use an ultrasound of the abdominal cavity. In this case, their internal location, structure, presence or absence of various formations or chronic diseases, etc. will be evaluated.

The most common reasons why a doctor prescribes an ultrasound scan:

  • gas formation;
  • a feeling of heaviness in the stomach ;
  • bitter taste in the mouth;
  • bouts of pain that are girdle;
  • trauma in the abdominal cavity;
  • frequent pain under the rib on the right side;
  • suspected inflammatory or infectious diseases.

Before performing an ultrasound, the patient needs to prepare correctly, otherwise the quality of the image of the organs may deteriorate and, accordingly, the result of the study will be incorrect. Therefore, it is worth adhering to some recommendations: do not eat for 5-6 hours and with increased gas formation, drink activated charcoal at night. It is also worth considering that before performing the study, it is forbidden to smoke, as this leads to a reduction in the gallbladder, and this can distort the results. Typically, the time and cost of performing this study will depend on the number of organs that need to be looked at.
