Description

The Murmansk Commercial Sea Port is located in the eastern part of the Kola Bay, which is part of the Barents Sea. It was built before the formation of the city of Murmansk and is the most powerful enterprise in the region.

The microclimate favorable enough for the polar region and the proximity of the warm streams of the Gulf Stream created wonderful conditions for shipping. Non-freezing even in harsh winters, the water area allows you to receive and send ships year-round with minimal use of icebreaking equipment. The width of the straits and the depth of the fairway allow vessels of all types to enter regardless of draft and size.

History of creation

By the end of the 19th century, only two ports functioned in the North-West of the Russian Empire - Arkhangelsk and Petersburg. Moreover, both experienced difficulties during the winter season with piloting vessels through the freezing waters. An icebreaking flotilla operated in St. Petersburg, the maintenance of which was not cheap. And the port in Arkhangelsk stopped its work with the onset of frost.

Officials pleasing for the state have repeatedly proposed the creation of a new fleet base in the ice-free waters of the Barents Sea. For example, in 1894, the Minister of Finance S. Witte turned to the tsar with this idea. With a new force, the need has arisen for the organization of a port in the First World War, when the German Navy blocked passages through the Baltic for ships of Russia and allies.

Work on the construction of the first pier in the Kola Bay began in the summer of 1915. After a month and a half (September 1), the Swedish ship Drott moored with goods from New York docked at the pier.

In the name of revolution

Soviet power carefully treated the imperial legacy. Understanding the strategic importance of the region, foreign troops occupying Murmansk and Arkhangelsk were first expelled, then work began on expanding the port infrastructure.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a boom in Arctic exploration began. Norwegian, British, Swedish, Danish, Italian scientists and pioneers equipped numerous expeditions to the polar region. Tanks, planes, gunpowder, ammunition, vehicles, ammunition passed through dilapidated berths and went straight to the war front. Thanks to the persistence of sailors, soldiers, workers, ordinary townspeople, Murmansk survived, becoming a hero city. It took years to fully restore port facilities.

Post-war period

The rapid development of the industry of the Kola Peninsula contributed to the expansion of infrastructure. In addition to cargo from the "mainland", the Murmansk Commercial Sea Port shipped timber, apatites, iron ore concentrates, and products from the Kandalaksha Aluminum Plant. For labor services in 1966, the government awarded the port workers the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. In the 80s MMTP in terms of cargo turnover became one of the leaders of the country.

Today

Today, the company's cargo turnover exceeds 15 million tons. Every year, 500-600 vessels are processed here. For the delivery and dispatch of incoming goods, 220,000 wagons are required. They work here daily and round the clock, regardless of the weather and holidays.

The Murmansk commercial port is the only one in the northwest where ships with a deadweight of 130,000 tons and more can be processed. It leads in cargo turnover among the ports of all countries located in the Northern Sea Basin. A high degree of mechanization and modern powerful equipment allow MMTP to export more cargo than all the ports of the region combined.

The port facilities consist of 19 large berths with a total length of 4 km. The parking depth reaches 14.2 meters, which is enough to moor huge tankers and dry cargo vessels. Depth on the roadstead varies from 20 to 60 meters.

The bulk of all cargo handled at the port is coal (76%). MMTP is one of the few ports that can handle this mineral. Murmansk holds a loading record of 153,000 tons for a dry cargo ship with a deadweight of 176,000 tons. Capacities allow annual transshipment of 14 million tons of coal.
