During the next business trip, the clerk meets Tyler Durden, a soap maker. Upon returning home, the protagonist finds out that his comfortable home was completely destroyed by a gas explosion, after which he calls a new acquaintance of Tyler in search of support. He immediately offers his own home, but after talking about his crazy life full of systemic resistance, he asks the main character to hit him. The narrator fulfills the request of the "landlord", which receives an instant response. The "fist" comrades are attracted by the strange behavior of other people, which is why the two decide to organize a "fight club".

The narrator discovers that the “fighting clubs” are open in every city, and their fighters take him for Tyler. The hero’s guess is confirmed by Marl’s girlfriend - he is that soap dealer, he blew up his comfortable home, it was he who organized the “fighting clubs”, whose members had already transgressed to the final stage of the “rout” campaign.
