Harry Bernard Cross was born on December 16, 1947 in one of the districts of London - Paddington. He grew up in a Catholic family, his parents were working class Irish. The boy's mother worked as a cleaner, and his father worked as a nurse and doorman. Ben appeared on stage early and tried himself in various roles in school performances. He attended Devonport High School, then Plymouth High School. But there, the boy was intimidated by the teacher, after which Ben left home at the age of fifteen.

Leaving home, he worked as a waiter, window cleaner, carpenter, and he also acted as a property owner in the theater.

At the age of 22, the young man was admitted to the famous Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.

Career

After graduating from the Academy, Cross worked in several London theaters. First appeared in films in 1976, playing a small role as a soldier in the military drama "The Bridge is Too Far". A year later, Ben was one of the members of the Royal Troupe, whose repertoire includes Shakespeare's works.

In 1978, Benn Cross played a lawyer in the production of "Chicago", so began the path of the actor to success and fame. During the game in the play, many directors noticed him and began to invite him to the cinema. So, in 1981, the sports drama "Fire Chariots" was released, which received four Oscars and several awards of the Cannes Film Festival and BAFTA.
