Dmitry Domani is rightfully considered one of the strongest basketball players in the history of Russia. Playing as a light forward and an attacking defender, he regularly became one of the most productive national championship players. Successful performances of the national team at world championships in the nineties, when the national team was regularly among the winners, are also associated with the name of Dmitry.
Start
Dmitry Domani was born in Moscow in 1974. The boy got an exotic surname from his grandfather, an Italian by birth. He grew up in a real sports family - his father Vyacheslav Domani was a professional volleyball player, played for the USSR national team, won the Olympic Games, world and European championships. Mom was also fond of volleyball, but her achievements were much more modest. Even Dmitry’s grandmother played ball hockey.
Dima inherited high growth from his parents, but he immediately decided for himself not to follow his father’s blindly and engage in volleyball, but to seek his own way of self-expression. He tried to play football, hockey, seriously engaged in swimming and even earned the first category. But by eleven years, it became clear that the most serious prospects await Dmitry Domani in basketball.
The guy’s talent was visible with the naked eye, so he was immediately taken to the specialized Sovetskaya youth sports school, where they prepared the future stars of national basketball.
Dmitry's American Dream
In the early nineties, the conditions for professional basketball in the country were not the best. Novice basketball player Dmitry Domani quickly navigated the environment and decided to kill two birds with one stone - to get a prestigious education and achieve sports progress. To do this, in 1993 he left Russia and went to the United States, where he became a student at the University of Philadelphia.
The leaders of the reputable educational institution gladly accepted an excellent athlete into their ranks who could strengthen the local basketball team. Dmitry studied in good faith and competed in local venues with the best young basketball players in the United States, playing for the St. Joseph University team. He did not get lost among local stars and even earned the title of best student defense player in 1997.
After graduation, he received a bachelor's degree in business and marketing, after which he unexpectedly returned to his homeland. According to the basketball player Dmitry Domani, whose photo adorned the overseas university honor board, he never tried to settle in the United States for a long time and from the very beginning he hoped to someday return to Moscow.
Soldier
Returning to Russia in 1997, a former American student became a player in the flagship of domestic basketball - Moscow CSKA. The competition in the team was very fierce, Dmitry Domani had to fight for a place with Kudelin, Shakulin, Vetra.
Gradually, the army recruiter adapted to Russian realities and became one of the team’s main players.
Here he played in the position of an attacking defender or light striker, since the guy’s two-meter growth allowed him to equally efficiently make bold passages to the ring and work on rebounds.
As part of CSKA, Dmitry Domani spent five seasons, having managed to win three national championships during this time and become one of the most successful basketball players in the Russian league.
Dynamo captain
In 2002, Dmitry changed the club and became a player in Moscow Dynamo. An experienced basketball player had great authority among his comrades and was soon elected captain of the team. In the first full season, he became the league’s most productive player, gaining 353 points in 18 matches.
As part of the “blue and white” Domani spent almost ten seasons, acquiring the status of a living legend of the club and its undisputed leader. With the help of his captain, Dynamo won several medals of the national championship, and in 2006 was marked by the greatest success in the international arena in its history. The Moscow club reached the final of the ULEB Cup, where the Greek “Aris” was waiting for him, and in a bitter struggle defeated rivals, having won the prestigious title.
Dmitry completed his magnificent long-term career in Samara, playing for the local Red Wings. After the birth of children for the basketball player Dmitry Domani, the family came out on top among his life priorities. Son Alex also plays basketball, and Martha's daughter has not yet decided on the choice.
Functionary
To the great chagrin of fans of the famous basketball player’s talent, his light image was somewhat overshadowed by the latest scandalous events around the Russian Basketball Federation.
After the player’s career ended, Dmitry Domani decided to prove himself as a sports official. Since 2013, he has been the general manager of the national basketball team.
In 2015, the public learned that a criminal case of major thefts was opened against the president of the Russian Basketball Federation Yulia Anikeeva . In this unpleasant case, according to the prosecutor's office, Dmitry Domani, who is one of the suspects, is also involved.
