The film "Crime and Punishment": a list of films

Attempts to create high-quality adaptation of Crime and Punishment, the cult classic of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, have appeared in the industry for many years. Now there are about ten paintings, and all of them can be briefly found in the article.

The first films. "Crime and Punishment"

Screen versions mainly relate to the last century. The first attempt was made back in 1923 in Germany. Then the technology did not allow to convey the fullness of sensations and enjoy the acting. The picture has long been forgotten, it was called "Raskolnikov", and Robert Vine was engaged in its creation.

In 1935, American masters, led by Joseph von Sternberg, turned to the drama of Dostoevsky. The picture was a free adaptation, but was far from the title of a hit of the first half of the 19th century. After that, attempts to create a decent adaptation were returned in 1959. The film “Crime and Punishment in the American Way” made more emphasis on the emotions of the main characters. He found his fans, but did not earn the status of a cult movie. That is why they continued to work on the novel of Dostoevsky in the future.

Soviet work

Until 1969, three screen versions of Crime and Punishment appeared, but not one of them was created in the homeland of Fedor Dostoevsky. Soviet masters undertook to rectify the situation, and after a long work they presented the work of the same name.

The plot completely repeated the main points of the novel. The main character Rodion Raskolnikov wants to study, he is a poor student from an ordinary family who cannot provide himself even with housing. He comes to mind the murder of an old woman, who gives everyone a loan at huge interest. So he decided to test his theory of division of people in society. New attempts

In 1998, American director Joseph Sargent decided to take on Dostoevsky’s novel about a poor student. The main argument for watching is the cast in the form of Patrick Dempsey, Ben Kingsley and Lily Horvath. The picture was shot more with emphasis on the investigation and the mental torment of Raskolnikov. Although the film has been over 20 years old, it surprises with high-quality production and deserves the title of the best film adaptation of Crime and Punishment.

The familiar plot begins with the scene of the murder, and later events develop closely to the literary source.

After only four years, this topic is again decided to take as a basis, but another team from the United States. The director of the next film “Crime and Punishment” was Menachem Golan. Of the actors, Crispin Glover, John Hurt and Vanessa Redgrave should be noted.

The plot is not original, because the story of Raskolnikov already has a powerful subtext. Here, the authors showed the way to repentance, hinting that any criminal could find him.

Recent films

Oddly enough, the adaptations of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment more often appeared abroad in Europe and America. The plot of Russian classics attracted industry masters, and in 2002, along with the film, a series with the same name was released, but in the UK. The director Julian Jarrold was responsible for his appearance. The plot is standard, as in previous works.

In 2012, the last film adaptation appeared. The film (“Crime and Punishment”, a novel by F. Dostoevsky) was shot in Kazakhstan, and the picture was called “Student”. This is not an exact retelling of the events of the novel, but a more free interpretation. The plot revolves around a university student in Almaty. The guy lives poorly in a rented apartment and is constantly faced with social inequality. Under the pressure of this factor, together with poverty, he decides to commit a crime.
