Scott Derrickson is an American director, screenwriter, and producer. Derrickson is known for his ominous horror films such as The Six Demons Emily Rose, Sinister, Urban Legends 2, and Deliver Us From the Evil One, as well as the superhero action movie Doctor Strange.
Biography
The future director was born (July 16, 1966) and raised in Denver, Colorado. He graduated from Biola University with a bachelor of arts degree with a focus on literature and philosophy. Then he received a master's degree in cinema.
Carier start
The first major project in the filmography of Scott Derrickson was the horror "City Legends 2" by John Ottman, to whom he wrote the script. The picture was coldly received by critics, but the audience was more lenient.
In the same year, Scott Derrickson made his debut as a director, removing the fifth part of the famous HellRaisers franchise. Film critics unanimously agreed that the series has outlived itself, and this sequel did not bring anything of value to it.
In 2004, Derrikson wrote the script for the Wim Wenders drama "Land of Abundance", which, despite the good reviews of film commentators, did not gain much popularity.
Breakthrough
In 2005, Scott Derrickson co-authored and directed the mystical horror The Six Demons Emily Rose. The plot was based on a real story about the ritual of expelling demons from the German girl Annelise Michel, which cost her her life.
He was awarded the Saturn Award in 2005 for Best Horror or Thriller, and in 2006 appeared on the list of "100 Scariest Films in Movie History." The main roles in the film were played by Jennifer Carpenter, Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson. The tape became a box office hit, collecting $ 144 million at the box office with a budget of 19 million. This is a great result for a horror movie.
Other projects
Having completed work on The Six Demons of Emily Rose, Scott Derrickson set to work on yet another grim religious horror, The Visit, based on Frank Peretti's novel. Derikson wrote the script for the picture, and the director was Robbie Henson. A small budget, lack of advertising and a change in the plot of the book did not benefit the film. The film "Visit" has not gained popularity, and even a few horror fans know about its existence.
In August 2011, director Scott Derrickson began work on the mystical horror film Sinister. Critics rarely spoil horror with warm reviews, but Sinister pleased them. With a budget of $ 3 million, the tape collected 78 million at the box office.
Such a commercial success made the creators think about working on a sequel. Sinister 2 was released in the summer of 2015. Derrikson acted as producer and screenwriter of the film, and directed by Kieran Foy.
In 2013, Derrickson wrote the script for the crime drama Devil Knot, based on real-life events. The director of the picture was Atom Egoyan. The main roles were played by Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth.
In the same year, Derrikson shot another gloomy masterpiece - the horror with elements of the detective "Deliver us from the evil one." The film is based on the novel of the same name by Lisa Collier Cool. The critics of “Deliver Us From the Sly" did not cause enthusiasm, however, like all the films of Scott Derrickson, the audience liked them - the box office amounted to almost 88 million dollars.
"Doctor Strange"
In 2016, Scott Derrickson made the first superhero movie of his career, Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Despite the fact that before that, Derrickson only worked on horror with a small budget, he managed to create a vivid and at the same time dramatic picture. “Doctor Strange” became a real box office hit - with a budget of $ 165 million, the film grossed 677 million at the box office. Film critics praised the picture, noting a strong cast, good directing, and excellent visual effects.
