One of the orthograms that is often found in the Russian language is a continuous or separate spelling with the "not" different parts of speech. Of particular difficulty are cases where an unambiguous answer about the correct spelling cannot be given without knowledge of the context. For example, “not right” and “wrong” - both options are possible depending on the situation.
Part of speech
Before parsing any spelling, it is recommended to determine the part of speech in the word that caused the difficulty. “Correct” as well as “wrong” or “not right” can be an adverb, a short adjective or a predicative word. (Some linguists consider predicates as a separate part of speech, while others consider one of the syntactic roles of the adverb).
The adverb “wrong” usually appears in the sentence as a circumstance that answers the question “how?”:
- He misunderstood you.
- Pay attention to the incorrectly solved problem.
“Wrong” as a short neuter adjective (from the full “correct”) occurs in sentences as a predicate in a full sentence:
If "wrong" is part of the predicate, then it is a state word:
- It would be wrong to expect a quick result.
Complete adjectives with no
The adverb "correctly" is formed from the adjective "correct" by adding the suffix "-o", so you first need to figure out how to write with "not" the adjective - "wrong" or "not correct".
The adjective in question is quality. The sign that it denotes can manifest itself to a greater or lesser extent: “more correct”, “most correct”. Such adjectives, when adding the prefix “non-”, most often form a word that is opposite to the original one in meaning, and are easily replaced by synonyms: for example, “wrong” is the same as “wrong”. In this value, "incorrect" is written together if there is no one of the following two conditions.
- The presence of opposition with the union "a" (Not the right decision, but the wrong one).
- The presence of words reinforcing the denial: “not at all”, “not at all”, “not at all”, “far”, “at all” and some others with the same meaning (The decision was made not at all).
It should be noted that the task of selecting a synonym is not always as simple as it might seem at first glance. Sometimes, not one synonym word is chosen, but a synonymous phrase: "conjugation of an irregular verb." Here the closest in meaning to the word “incorrect” phrase “being an exception”, but “incorrect” is spelled in this context.
Wrong: different parts of speech with no
As for all short adjectives and adverbs formed from the adjective with the suffix "-o", the spelling of the word "correctly" with "not" is governed by the same rules as for the full adjective:
- "You got it all wrong." - It is written together, as "incorrectly" is identical in meaning to "erroneous".
- "You did not understand everything correctly, but erroneously." - It is written separately, since there is a contrast.
- "You got it all wrong." - It is written separately, as there is an amplifying word.
The dependence of writing on the meaning of the statement
In fact, when choosing the correct spelling "wrong" or "not right", the meaning embedded by the author in this word is of great importance.
If "incorrectly" is used as an antonym of the word "correct", then fused spelling is correct. In the case when there is no complete opposite of the word “right”, it is required to write separately.
In the sentence "You misunderstood the essence of my words," the spelling should be considered the main option, since the meaning of the phrase "misunderstood" in most cases is equivalent to the expression "misunderstood."
It is more accurate to say that in this example both options are possible - "wrong" and "not right." Separate spelling will be true if the author has, for example, such a meaning: "the essence of my words you did not understand correctly and not erroneously, you just think a little differently." There is no direct indication of the interlocutor’s mistake in such a proposal.
Thus, choosing between continuous and separate writing, it is important to pay special attention to the context.
