Since ancient times, moles have been considered the secret of female charm. A small number of moles can only decorate a person, make him unique. But they need to be closely monitored, because they can cause a lot of problems. You need to know which moles are safe and which should be feared. So why do people need moles, and what role do they play in our lives?
What it is?
In medicine, moles are called "nevus", they are considered benign skin tumors. In most cases, they appear in people with fair skin, less often with a slightly dark skin. Contrary to opinions, nevi appear the same in both men and women. In this case, neoplasms appear on any part of the skin.
It is not yet known for certain why people have moles and why they appear on our body. Despite the fact that this question is still open, doctors have identified several main causes of the appearance of nevi:
- Even at birth, there may be a small number of moles, that is, they are inherited, but this does not happen very often.
- For the first time, neoplasms in adolescence are actively beginning to appear. The thing is that the hormone changes in the young body.
- During pregnancy, women observe the appearance of new moles.
- Ultraviolet radiation.
It should be understood that nevi acquired after birth can change throughout life. During pregnancy, neoplasms can slightly increase in size and become darker, but when the body returns to normal, the spots will return to their original size and color.
What color affects
As with hair, eyes, or skin, melanin affects mole color. The more this substance, the darker the color of the tumor will be. In some cases, they can be colorless, that is, completely merge with the color of your skin. Small nodules on the skin will be visible, often such moles appear on the scalp.
In some cases, spots may acquire a bluish tint. In the vast majority of cases, they appear in children in early childhood, then a small rim appears, and the nevus simply disappears.
Hue is not a diagnostic feature. The color of moles depends only on melanin, but care must be taken to ensure that it does not change. Experts also look at the color of the spot: if the color is not uniform, and in one area you can observe a dark, and the other a light shade, then in this case additional diagnostic procedures should be carried out.
Location Features and Quantity
Since no one knows why a person needs moles on the body, their appearance in a significant number and in various places is alarming. On average, an ordinary adult has up to 20 moles on his body. However, if there are significantly more of them, panic should not be raised: it all depends on the family's predisposition, and the amount of sunlight also affects the number.
It is necessary to periodically examine the neoplasms, and if they become atypical, then this can lead to the appearance of melanoma. About 30% of melanomas develop from common moles that have become atypical.
As for their location, scientists have not yet come to a definite answer - they can appear anywhere and anytime.
Capillary nevi
So, why do people need moles, it became clear, but they appear not only as pigment spots, the color of which is regulated by melanin. Very often, capillary nevi appear in children - red spots that can reach 10 centimeters in diameter.
These neoplasms are benign and, by and large, are not dangerous. The thing is that due to the genetic predisposition, capillaries grow too fast, and therefore nevi appear. As a rule, a child already has them from birth in the first months of a babyβs life, they can develop very quickly, but do not worry, closer to seven years they can completely disappear without leaving any trace.
Many parents worry about the appearance of their child and ask doctors for surgical intervention. In this way, you can achieve the desired result, the nevus will disappear, but if it was large enough, then there is a chance that the baby will have large scars, which will be more difficult to get rid of.
If the neoplasm appeared near the eye, then the attending physician should take measures and prescribe hormone therapy, which will slow the growth of nevus.
Older capillary nevi and complications
As in the case with ordinary moles, these neoplasms can turn into malignant tumors, so regular medical examination is urgently needed. At older ages, capillary nevi appear extremely rarely, this is an exception to the rule. In this case, surgical intervention is required.
If a child who has capillary spots complains of discomfort, a specialist consultation is immediately needed. Alarming symptoms are:
- itching and burning;
- rapid growth over a long time;
- new moles of various sizes regularly appear;
- flaky skin for no apparent reason;
- skin irritation appears around the nevus.
How to determine that a mole is atypical
There are several simple, but at the same time quite effective diagnostic methods that can be carried out at home:
- Asymmetry. When the tumor is benign, it is symmetrical. Checking this is quite simple, you just need to take a thin thread and hold it in the center of the mole. If both sides have the same shape, then everything is fine.
- A benign mole will have clear and even edges. If they are uneven, torn or blurry, you should consult a dermatologist.
- The color should be uniform and not change after appearance. When the nevus becomes darker or begins to blacken, a specialist consultation is necessary.
- The size. Spots that have a size of more than 6 mm should be shown to the doctor, nevi of a smaller diameter extremely rarely turn into melanoma.
- Development. If seals appear around the mole, it begins to bleed, itch or cause discomfort, you should make an appointment with a dermato-oncologist.
Why do people need moles on their bodies?
In fact, these spots do not bring any benefit to the body, but with proper care they do not cause discomfort - these are just pigmented neoplasms that appear for various reasons. In some cases, they can be removed for cosmetic purposes.
Now you know why people need moles and what needs to be done so that they do not radically change a personβs life. Be sure to monitor the state of your health and all the neoplasms that appear on the body.
