In 2007, Hyundai Motor CIS was established to promote and accompany Hyundai brand cars . In 2010, on its basis in St. Petersburg, construction began on a full-cycle assembly plant - the Hyundai plant (St. Petersburg). Description
The first Russian enterprises working on the assembly of foreign cars mainly used components from abroad, assembling cars as designers. The Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg was the first to organize the so-called full production cycle with a high level of localization, when the vast majority of components are manufactured directly at the parent company or by Russian partners.
The main workshops at the Hyundai plant are:

Stamping workshop
From here begins the production of four-wheeled vehicles. In its walls, huge rolls of sheet metal turn into elements of the car body. Here, with an accuracy of tenths of a millimeter, they give a complex curved shape to the hood, trunk, sides, roof, doors and other elements of the vehicle.
Installed automated presses with a capacity of 800-2300 tons, despite their impressive size, have enviable flexibility: it takes very little time to replace the molds and begin to make parts for another model or modification. The productivity of only one press is such that during continuous operation it is capable of producing 10-14 thousand blanks per day. Such a volume is excessive for the Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg, therefore, having made the required batch, it is stopped for readjustment or maintenance.
In total, 4 units were installed in the workshop:
- At the first, most powerful press, primary bulk blanks are squeezed.
- Then they enter the working area of the second press, where technological holes for knots, sensors, mechanisms and devices are cut.
- A third press cuts off excess metal.
- The fourth press is designed for bending the edges, thereby preparing the panel for the welding process.
In total, about 40 types of body elements are produced in the workshop. Finished parts are moved to temporary storage warehouses.
Welding shop
Within its walls, individual elements are assembled into a single frame. Here, the main characters are high-tech robots. 120 automated welding machines-manipulators under the supervision of operators produce the most critical part of the work. At six auxiliary sections, the hood, trunk, sidewall, door and bottom parts are individually welded. On the main conductor they are combined into a single whole - in the body.
The work of the welding conveyor is a bewitching sight. Smart transforming machines weld metal surfaces shining under the lamps with the highest accuracy and inhuman agility. Sheaves of sparks break out every now and then in the contact zone. The bodies move in a continuous stream along the conveyor belt, "fouling" with new elements, and then follow for painting.
Paint shop
Here operators in protective suits, reminiscent of astronauts, and smart cars carry out the application of a protective coating and a decorative paint layer. Specially selected paint formulations, with proper use and proper care, are capable of preserving their properties for decades. Microspraying is carried out on the prepared metal surface, which eliminates the peeling of the pigment layer and the formation of “spiders” due to moisture entering the microcracks.
Assembly shop
On its conveyor, “naked” bodies “grow” with a useful “filling”:
- nodes, mechanisms and assemblies;
- soundproof and decorative elements;
- glasses, mirrors, seats;
- dashboard and electronic systems.
Employees at work use a high-tech tool, each stage of work is additionally tested. Build quality is close to ideal. The workshop employs exclusively professionals.

Initially, the Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg was built for a specific model - Solaris. It is adapted for domestic operating and climatic conditions, has a great design, has sufficient driving characteristics and enviable comfort. And all this at an attractive price. It is no accident that Hyundai Solaris has been included in the top of the best-selling cars in Russia in recent years.
A double wishbone suspension and a clearance of 16 cm help to overcome native bumps without any problems, which compares favorably with European models with a clearance of 10-14 cm, and those striving to catch a bump or a border on the bottom. The galvanized body adequately resists the salts and mixtures that generously sprinkle the roadway in winter. The glass heating and the battery with increased power are not out of place.
Naturally, the Solaris lineup does not end there. Here they collect the model “Kia Rio”, which has gained high popularity in the world. In 2016, the promising “SUV” Creta was launched in a series. For the sake of its production, the capacities at which Hyundai Solaris had previously been assembled with a hatchback body (a sedan continues to be produced) were released.
The crossover is adapted to Russian realities: the washer reservoir volume is increased, the clearance has become large, the motors are selected in accordance with the quality of the fuel. The management expects to monthly produce 4-5 thousand machines of this brand from the conveyor. In 2017, the total capacity of the plant can reach 230,000 units of vehicles.
