The Bulgarian Embassy in Moscow is the official permanent diplomatic mission of the Republic of Bulgaria in Russia. The structural units of the organization also include consulates in Yekaterinburg and St. Petersburg.
The beginning of interstate relations
For the first time, diplomatic relations between the two states were established in 1879, immediately after the signing of the Berlin Treaty, which was the result of the Russo-Turkish war.
The first head of the Bulgarian embassy in Moscow was Konstantin Stoilov, who was appointed to this post in 1883. Given the contribution that Russia has made to the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule, one could hope for a long and productive relationship.
However, the positive charge of bilateral cooperation was enough only for several decades. In 1915, Bulgaria entered the First World War on the side of Germany. Diplomatic communication between countries was broken.
Bulgarian-Russian relations
They were restored in 1934. However, a few years later the Second World War began. And she made her corrections, as a result of which the Bulgarian embassy in Moscow was closed. Relations again restored in 1945, but at a fundamentally different level.
Throughout the post-war period, until the collapse of the USSR, Bulgaria was part of the so-called Soviet bloc and was a member of the Warsaw Treaty Organization, a military-political union of eight communist countries of Eastern Europe.
Relations after the USSR
A fundamentally new stage in bilateral relations began after the liquidation of the USSR and the beginning of the process of decommunization in Bulgaria. The first head of the embassy in independent Russia was Vladimir Velchev.
In the 1990s formal and not too close relations were maintained between countries. However, a sharp change has taken place since the early 2000s.
From 2002 to 2008, the leaders of Bulgaria and Russia met nine times, which indicates a strong mutual interest and intentions to deepen not only political, but also economic cooperation.
Over the years, agreements have been signed on cooperation in the military-technical, transport, and tourism sectors, which is especially important for Bulgaria.
