Martin McDonagh - the new Gogol and anti-Tarantino

Martin McDonagh is called the great playwright of our time. Even the most cynical critics speak respectfully of him, they call him the author smart, deep and subtle, comparing him with Ostrovsky, Chekhov, Albi and Becket. Martin MacDonagh (in fact, the pronunciation is more consistent with the MacDan version) is an English playwright of Irish descent, screenwriter, film director, producer. Winner of the Oscar (Six-Charged) in the category "Best Short Feature Film". The beginning of the creative path

Martin McDonagh was born on March 26, 1970. His father, a native Irishman, was a construction worker, his mother a cleaner. The future idol of millions was born in London, but after some time his parents will return to their historical homeland - to Galway (Ireland), and Martin and his brother chose to stay in Britain. After spending some time on unemployment benefits, the future playwright Martin McDonagh took up the pen. An infinite number of plays and scripts were categorically rejected by the editors, after which he came up with a stunning success. In 1997, his play Queen of Beauty, written a year earlier, was literally put on Broadway in a week. After the presentation of the theater awards "Tony" and Evening Standard, the author becomes world-famous.

Through thorns in cinema

Despite the more than successful and fast-paced career of a playwright, Martin McDonagh became more interested in cinema. After reviewing hundreds of films, preferring the works of Scorsese, Lynch and Tarantino, Martin began to write screenplays that initially did not work out too well. Although the plays created during the same period were received with appreciation by a grateful audience. But, having shown enviable persistence, the playwright nevertheless burst into the chaotic world of the film industry.

Mr. McDonagh found his viewer

Martin McDonagh, whose filmography is currently quite impressive, managed to prove himself in various roles in the cinema.

As a director and screenwriter:

  • “Full Clip (Six-Charger)” (2005) - the film was called one of the best in the subgenre of black crime comedy, or “Tarantines”. McDonagh's individual directorial and scriptwriting style was recognized as unique, and his project was a combination of heartbreaking drama with intellectual crime comedy.
  • “Bottom of the Bruges” (2008) - the debut full-length picture caused general delight. Martin McDonagh put together in the project everything that glorified British cinema. Interesting character characters and great actors. Black humor, not contradicting the fact that in the end the movie turns out to be a tragedy. Famously twisted plot.
  • “Seven Psychopaths” (2012) - the triumph of postmodernism and a parody of a parody in which brutal humor in equal proportions is mixed with touching, gentle and allegorical. Categorically uniquely determine the genre policy of this crazy film project is extremely difficult even for a seasoned experienced movie fan. Director Martin McDonagh makes all films in this spirit, this is his author's style.

As a producer - Once Upon a Time in Ireland (2011), Seven Psychopaths (2012).

New theater world sensation

Critics unanimously called the playwright for the unique humor “new Gogol”, and for the amazing philanthropy - “anti-Tarantino”. Now Martin’s creations are staged everywhere: in America, Europe and Russia. Leading domestic theatergoers find in his plays countless allusions to Russian reality.

The performance “Beauty Queen”, which brought Martin McDonagh world fame, is included in the repertoire of the Moscow theater “Satyricon”. According to Konstantin Raikin, he did not choose her by chance, there is a domestic conflict in it, which is understandable to the domestic audience. The main character leaves a wide choice for the manifestation of creative imagination of not only the actor, but also the director. In reincarnation there is comic and intriguing novelty.

Director Martin McDonagh all films

On the stage of the Moscow Art Theater is another psychological thriller from McDonagh. Stage director Kirill Serebrennikov intentionally preserved the gloomy poetry and black humor of the play "The Pillow Man." The plot narrative takes the viewer to a harsh totalitarian state in which an inquiry takes place and during it the testimony is knocked out of a young writer. His fault is that the distraught maniac embodies the plots of his short stories. Action is like confession.

It is hoped that Martin McDonagh will maintain his corporate identity and unique sense of taste, will not slow down and continue to delight the public with his work.
