Broad is my native country! These well-known, imperishable words of the poet really perfectly characterize Russia. Its expanses are immense, and across the entire territory of our Motherland the most diverse cities are scattered - which are older, which are newer. Among them there is a relatively small but beautiful city with a rich history. This is Voronezh. What is special about this settlement, what sights it is famous for, what other cities there are in this region, as well as how long it is and what areas the Voronezh region borders on - all this can be found below.
History of Voronezh
It is still not known for certain in what years the city was founded, which now lies 463 kilometers from Moscow. No decree on the founding of Voronezh was found, but there is a mention of it in the documents of 1586, indicating the sufficient antiquity of the city described here. Regarding him, by the way, in general, the information is either inaccurate or unknown - that’s why linguists and historians argue about the origin of the name of this area. Some believe that it is formed from two words - "crow" and "hedgehog", and those, in turn, denote the names of the tribes that lived here in time immemorial. However, this opinion is rather more popular, not considered by serious scientists. From the "scientific" points of view on the origin of the name of the city and the surrounding area, the following can be distinguished:
- From the word "raven", "crow".
- From the word 'black'.
- From the names of the rivers by the color of the water in it - and so on.
Nowadays, the administrative center of the Voronezh region (area in sq. Km of it is 52, 4) bears the proud title of the city of military glory (it was received ten years ago). Voronezh had to survive a lot during its existence, including a terrible fire that happened in 1590. Then almost the whole city was destroyed, and then, like a phoenix from the ashes, it was reborn from scratch. It so happened that this was not the only fire in the history of Voronezh - the second one happened in 1748 and turned to ashes the whole center of the city, which was located on the river bank at that time (for the third time, however, not quite from the fire, Voronezh was destroyed in twentieth century, during the war with Germany - restored by 1950). A few dozen years earlier, in 1715, Voronezh became the center of the new province - at first it was called Azov, and after ten years it received the same name with its main city. At the end of the eighteenth century, the emblem of Voronezh was renewed - a double-headed eagle appeared in it, granted for special merits by royal mercy.
Voronezh in numbers and data
Before talking about how many cities in the Voronezh region, as well as what are the neighboring regions, a few words should be said about some important things concerning the ancient city. It stands on the river of the same name, on the banks of the Voronezh reservoir. Literally a few kilometers later, the river flows into the Don, because in some ancient documents where the mention of Voronezh is found, it is called Voronezh-on-Don. This is a million-plus city: according to last year, the number of Voronezh residents was 1,039,801 people. The population of the agglomeration formed around the city exceeds 1.3 million people. Since 1990, the village is included in the list of historical cities of our country. The length of the border of the Voronezh region from north to south is 277 kilometers, from west to east - 352 kilometers.
What is famous for Voronezh
What areas does the Voronezh Region border on? This is, of course, interesting, but why is it worth talking about this city? What is he famous for? At least two things: Voronezh is considered to be the birthplace of the airborne troops and the navy of our country. So, back in 1700, a sailboat with fifty-eight cannons was launched on Voronezh waters, the design of which was invented by Peter the Great. This was the first Russian ship of this type, in the creation of which foreigners did not take part. And two and a half centuries later, on the second of August 1930, not far from Voronezh, for the first time in the history of the Soviet Union, twelve people landed, and on this day all paratroopers of Russia celebrate their holiday in our time.
And it was precisely in Voronezh that the production of the world's first supersonic passenger aircraft Tu-144 was launched. This significant event took place at the very end of the sixties of the last century.
What else Voronezh is famous for is its parks and squares, of which there are many in the city. The central children's park "Orlyonok" and the park "Scarlet Sails", the arboretum, the central park and many other green recreation areas are at the full disposal of residents and guests of all ages every day. There are also many different museums, theaters, cinemas, cultural and architectural monuments in the city - for example, the house where the famous writer Ivan Bunin was born.
Cities of the Voronezh region
The question of cities in this region is directly related to the question of how many administrative districts the Voronezh region is divided into. As mentioned above, the main city in the region is Voronezh itself, it is also one of the three urban districts (along with Borisoglebsky and Novovoronezh). In addition, in the Voronezh region there are municipal districts, as well as rural and urban settlements, in which there are 32 rather large settlements. This, for example, Bobrov, Kalach, Novovoronezh, Pavlovsk, Rossosh, Ertil and others.
Voronezh region in numbers
Before calling any numbers, we should briefly recall the history of the creation of the region. As already mentioned above, the Azov province was originally organized, whose center became Voronezh. Incidentally, it is precisely with its foundation that the formation of the borders of the region is connected. In 1725, the Azov province was renamed Voronezh; she remained with it until 1928, when the Central Black Earth Region was formed by the decision of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee. It included four regions at once, including the Voronezh region. Such territorial division did not exist for long - only six years. In 1934, the region was divided into two - Voronezh and Kursk, and three years later, the Tambov region left the Voronezh region. The official date of formation of the region is 1934.
Currently, the Voronezh region is the fifty-first largest among all the subjects of our country (all of them, by the way, are 85), covering an area of more than 52 thousand square kilometers. More than two million people live in this territory - by someone’s standards, but by someone’s not very big (a good half of them are in Voronezh itself). The urban population of the Voronezh region allowed to bring it to third place in terms of population in the country. By the way, about the territory: although the area of the Voronezh region is not the largest in the country, but it exceeds the area of such European countries as Denmark, for example, or Slovakia. And what is the time zone of the Voronezh region? The same as in Moscow - plus three hours GMT.
Regions in the neighborhood
So, with what areas does the Voronezh region border? First of all, it should be noted that this region has common borders not only with Russian settlements, but also with Ukraine - namely, with its Luhansk region, Voronezh adjoins in the south. Also another southern neighbor of Voronezh, "associates" is the Rostov region. In the west, Voronezh residents can intersect with Belgorod residents, and in the northwest they can intersect with residents of Kursk. Neighbors from the north - Lipetsk region, and from the north-east - Tambov.

Ukraine
The borders of the Voronezh region with Ukraine converge at the point of intersection with Lugansk and the adjacent territory. Before talking about the distance between Lugansk and Voronezh and how to get there, it’s worth a few words to say about the Ukrainian city itself. It is incomparably younger than Voronezh - it was formed only in 1795. And its population is not an example smaller in number - only 400 with a few thousand people (according to data from three years ago). The whole Lugansk region appeared only in the past century - in June of the thirty-eighth year. It, like the neighboring region, has more than two million inhabitants, the bulk of which, of course, are Ukrainians. However, the percentage of the Russian population is also quite high.
The distance between Voronezh and Lugansk does not exceed four hundred and fifty kilometers, which can be overcome in various ways. The first and probably the easiest - by car. Such a path will take about eight hours and will pass five settlements. However, not everyone prefers traveling by car. For such people, there are other types of transport - for example, a bus. Several flights run from city to city on certain days of the week (each route has its own "weekend"). Travel time takes about ten hours - that is, more than by car, because public transport travels at a slower speed, and also with stops. The cost of a one-way ticket may vary, however, it is kept within 800-900 rubles.
Another way to travel for those who like the sound of wheels and the open spaces outside the window is through trains. Such travels have their advantages and convenience, but, unfortunately, many, there are no direct flights between Voronezh and Lugansk. Like flights, this is probably the reason for the current relations between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the situation in Lugansk. Thus, the choice for those who want to get from Voronezh to Lugansk is small. In addition, it is important to know that currently men from 18 to 60 years old must have an invitation in order to get into the territory of our sister country.
Voronezh - Volgograd
The border of the Volgograd and Voronezh regions is located in the southeast. And the Volgograd region itself occupies 112 with a small thousand square kilometers. The population in it is slightly larger than in the neighboring region - not two million, but two and a half. The center of the region is Volgograd, a hero city, formerly called Stalingrad, even earlier - Tsaritsyn and really known not only throughout the country, but also abroad. By its antiquity, Volgograd can easily compete with Voronezh - its foundation date is considered to be 1589, despite the fact that the first mention of it is dated a decade earlier. Since the end of the eighteenth century, Volgograd has the status of a city, and according to last year, a little more than a million people live in it - as well as in its neighbor.
The distance between these two cities is just over 570 kilometers. By car, it can be overcome in 6-7 hours. There are two options for the route - through Borisoglebsk (as they say, it is more convenient, but the road itself is worse) or through Millerovo and Morozovsk (this will come out a little longer in time, but the driver’s nerves will remain with him).
In addition, there is a bus service between Volgograd and Voronezh. This type of public transport runs quite often, almost every hour the next bus leaves both from the car and from the Voronezh railway station (the first at eight in the morning, the last at ten in the evening). The journey takes about ten hours (of course, with stops), and the price of the issue ranges from nine hundred rubles.
You can get to Volgograd from Voronezh, unlike Lugansk, by train. Only here there are no direct trains between these points. Therefore, those who wish to ride on rails will have to do a transfer at the Dirt station. In total, the road will take about 14-15 hours, but there is the opportunity to take a nap, or at least just lie down, stretched out legs.
Air traffic between Volgograd and Voronezh is also absent, you can fly from point A to point B only through Moscow - which significantly increases the cost of travel. And since, due to all transfers and expectations, the travel time is slightly reduced, it makes little sense to make such a voyage and spend large amounts.
Voronezh - Saratov
Saratov region borders with Voronezh in the east. In size, it occupies the thirty-second place in the country, spreading over an area of 101 thousand square kilometers. The Saratov region has existed for about the same time as its neighbor - since 1936. There are more than 1800 settlements in it - both towns and cities, and the center of the region is Saratov.
It was founded in 1590 and, like Voronezh, is an ancient historical and cultural center. Saratov is smaller than its neighbor, both in area and in number of inhabitants (394 square kilometers and eight hundred and more than thousand people - according to last year), but nevertheless, it is among the twenty largest Russian cities, not even being a millionaire.
The distance between Saratov and Voronezh is not too big - about 520 kilometers, and it can be overcome by car in 5-6 hours (of course, depending on what speed you go). The path, as in the case of Volgograd, will also lie through Borisoglebsk. And just as in the case of Volgograd, one can’t fly from one of these cities to another without transfers.
But there is a direct railway link between Saratov and Voronezh, which is good news. Trains from Voronezh leave on odd numbers (respectively, back - on even numbers), the journey takes about 13 hours. The minimum fare is about 1800 rubles.
Two bus flights running every other day also connect Saratov with Voronezh. On the way, travelers in this way will spend a little more than eleven hours, and they will have to pay a thousand rubles for the ticket.
Voronezh - Tambov
Another neighbor of the Voronezh region - Tambov - is quite small. And no wonder, because earlier it was part of the first (this was mentioned above). Currently, the Tambov region exists autonomously and occupies 34 thousand square kilometers, settling in 63th place among the territories of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. A million people live in the entire region, and a little less than three hundred thousand live in Tambov, the center of the region. This is a very small town, one might say, chamber, but there are quite a lot of antiquities, cultural and historical buildings in it.
The distance between Tambov and Voronezh does not exceed two hundred kilometers. You can overcome them in different ways: by car - in three hours on a fairly flat road; by bus - in about six hours and 500 rubles (for a child two times cheaper) with a stop in Lipetsk or Mordovo; by train - there is no direct train, but it is possible to get on passing, for example, the route Novosibirsk - Belgorod, for 700-1500 rubles; as for air transportation, they, however regrettable it may be, are absent between the two cities.
Voronezh - Rostov
The border of the Voronezh and Rostov regions lies in the south, adjacent to the Lugansk region. Rostov Region occupies a little more than one hundred thousand square kilometers and is 33 on the list of Russian territories. But in terms of the number of inhabitants, this region is the sixth in the country - over four million people live in such a seemingly small area! A quarter of them live in the capital of the region - Rostov-on-Don, which, like Voronezh, has been a city of military glory for ten years. At the same time, Rostov is more than a century younger than its neighbor - it was formed only in 1749.
The distance between Rostov and Voronezh is approximately 560 kilometers, which can be overcome with a car at normal speed in 6-7 hours. There are also public transport between these cities - for example, buses, of which more than 20 pieces run on the Voronezh-Rostov route. As a rule, flights depart at night; the earliest leaves at noon; the journey takes at least seven, or even nine hours. The cost of such a trip is from a thousand rubles.
There are as many as sixteen trains connecting these settlements, among them both direct and passing. The ticket price directly depends on the class of the car, as well as on the level of comfort of the train itself.
As for the planes - here again zilch: there are no direct flights, and a transfer flight in the capital will cost at least five hours of free time and a tidy sum.
Voronezh - Lipetsk
The border of the Lipetsk and Voronezh regions is in the north. Lipetsk is the closest to Voronezh from the above cities - they are only 132 kilometers apart. Although it was founded in 1703, the city began to be considered only in 1779. The population of Lipetsk is a little more than half a million people, while a million live in the region itself. This is a completely small region, covering an area of only 24 thousand square kilometers.
You can drive from Lipetsk to Voronezh by car in just one and a half to two hours. It will take a little longer to get there by bus - around three hours. This public transport runs between these two settlements very often - because there are buses both direct from Voronezh and passing from / to other cities. You can leave every 30-40 minutes, while the ticket will cost no more than 300 rubles.
Also well established between Lipetsk and Voronezh and the railway connection. There are an incredibly large number of trains passing through these cities, so buying a ticket is no problem at all. Travel time takes from two to four hours, the issue price is from 500 to 1500 rubles (depends on many factors).
Airplanes between Lipetsk and Voronezh do not fly because of the extremely close distance, but the trains run quite successfully. True, there are no direct ones - only with a change in Usman.
Voronezh - Belgorod
Belgorod residents are neighbors of Voronezh residents in the west. Belgorod region is slightly larger than Lipetsk - 27 thousand square kilometers. According to data already this year, one and a half million people live on this small square, of which almost four hundred thousand live in Belgorod, the regional center, the first in Russia, by the way, which received the title of city of military glory. It is as ancient as Voronezh - was formed in 1596.
The distance between Belgorod and Voronezh is 254 kilometers. You can overcome them by car in three to four hours. The bus on the route Voronezh - Belgorod runs quite often, without days off. The first flight leaves at 6:15, the last at 18:40. The journey takes up to six hours, the ticket costs from 500 rubles. But trains between these cities rarely run - no more than one or two flights per day. On the way, you will have to spend around eight hours, paying for the trip from a thousand rubles.
Fans of flights can also be glad - there is a direct connection between Belgorod and Voronezh. You need to get into the air for only one hour, and give about five to six thousand rubles for this pleasure.
Voronezh - Cantemation
Now one may be surprised to say: "The Voronezh region does not have such a border!" And true, no, but it’s impossible not to mention Kantemirovka in connection with Voronezh. This is an urban-type settlement located in the district of the same name, which, as you might guess, is its center and has about 11 thousand inhabitants. Founded in the eighteenth century, Kantemirovka lies 280 kilometers from Voronezh. It deserves mentioning because during the Great Patriotic War heavy bloody battles took place there (who did not hear about the existence of the Kantemirov division?). In three hours you can get from Voronezh to Kantemirovka by car, for seven and 600-700 rubles - by bus.
