These people were issued by the provocateur nicknamed the Centaur. Therefore, the investigation falls into the competence of the KGB. The committee sends a young officer, Boris Varaksin, senior lieutenant, to clarify the circumstances of the incident. This person arrives at the place. Nobody knows him in the city yet. The employee pretends to be a student who came to work as a sailor on a fishing vessel. Varaksin settles in the hotel room where the deceased lived. The hero makes acquaintance with people who are more or less connected with Yushkov.

He checks the suspects' involvement in the crime without revealing himself. Having worked out a number of false versions, the employee exposes the provocateur. The criminal after the war began to live in these parts and worked as a bus driver.

At the bus station, he was identified by Yushkov, who had come to town to rest. The centaur manages to catch red-handed at the moment when he is trying to kill a witness in the same courtyard. The hero simultaneously exposes the gang of speculators and robbers.
